“new hotel; excellent service = 2 thumbs up!”

Sun tan beach hotel is divine. It's a new hotel so all rooms (or in this case our room) is in good condition, clean and have a very good view of the beach and sunset. The staff were all friendly too and very accommodating especially in booking and suggesting for excursions. They have a variety of dishes in their in-house menu, i never expected it for a small hotel. The food was great, not really the extraordinary type but it's worth the cost. Breakfast is alright though you'll have very limited choices, if we stayed longer i guess we'll end up ordering another variety from their menu and neglect the free breakfast. :) If you'll visit Maldives, aside from visiting the amazing beaches and resorts you should try their night fishing excursion. it's an extraordinary experience for us especially me, a first timer. You can get big fishes, i mean really big fishes and if your lucky you can spot a lot of plankton shining in the water like we did. The hotel offered to barbecue our catch for $8, and we have a fiesta of big barbecue fishes!
If your still on the planning stage to visit Maldives I suggest you go there in any day except friday to save cost of the speedboat transfer, Friday is Muslim's holy day so no public ferry on that day. Public ferry will cost you about $2 only from male and speedboat is roughly $220 going to Maafushi. It's a big chop-off in our budget since we went there on a friday but we felt like royalty having a speedboat all to ourselves (hubby & i) and was greeted like royalty as well. The hotel staff (Hassan) is very prompt and helpful in our email correspondence. He helped us booked our speedboat transfer and answer all our queries before our scheduled vacation.

To sum it up, I will greatly recommend this hotel if you choose to stay in Maafushi. You won't have to spend more but you'll get the best services & a very comfortable stay. Only downside is their snorkeling equipment. Most of it are in bad shape though it's free of charge and can use anytime.

Room Tip: seaview room at the 2nd level has better view of sunset & beach

The staff is so lovely and kind. The beach is a few meters away! Rooms are good and if u have a seaview room, u will feel like in heaven. Their breakfast was simple but enough and tasty. Their food was amazing ( chinese chilli fish, thai lemon fish were my favorites!). affordable and a very good hotel with amazing staff.

Where I am from this is a saying that suggests that things may look good from the outside but the basics are missing, which pretty much sums up Sun Tan hotel.

After spending time on Dhigurah at TME resort and then Rasdhoo Island at Ras Reef, where we had a great time - excellent guesthouses, interesting local communities and great diving / snorkelling; we where looking forward to staying at Sun Tan hotel and visiting Maafushi after reading all the positive reviews. But we were to be very disappointed on so many levels and meant we left the Maldives on a negative note.

On arrival at Sun tan hotel we were greeted with a drink, quickly followed by the bill, a big selling pitch on the activities and their cost and the menu. Like the Chinese girls we arrived with, after a long journey we just wanted to stop and get to our rooms and in the end, after 20-30 mins we had to ask to be taken to our rooms. Never before have I been greeted with the bill and I refused to pay until check out.

Our room...
I had booked a 'city view' - when we stood on the balcony our city view was a building site and dump. We complained and were told that there were no other rooms but they would move us later in the week. We spent 3 days looking and hearing the building site and then 1 day looking at the ocean when they moved us for our final night. The upper sea view rooms are lovely. The Chinese girls also complained about their room (bottom sea view) which they said had a very bad smell.

Within the first hour of being in our room, my boyfriend had to go to reception 3/4 times with complaints and my boyfriend was told that he was an 'angry man'???. We never complain, we have travelled and lived around the world staying in the most basic of conditions but we arrived in a room that we were paying more than double the price of the last 2 guesthouses and it had lots of problems. Yes it looked nice, but the TV did not work (they hadnt paid the bill), there was no WIFI in these 'city' rooms, the balcony door did not lock, the taps in the bathroom were falling off. All of the above they did sort out over time, although the WIFI still did not work - we had to stand in the corridor or sit in the breakfast room. It worked better in the sea view rooms.

The food was disappointing - breakfast lacking ( the worst by far of the guesthouses we stayed at), the waiting for the food at other times - 90 mins and when it came it was really bad food. I have to say that this was the case in most restaurants on Maafushi. Best to go early at 6/6.30. The waiters try and are most probably overworked - but communication can be a problem and every time you order something the bill gets shoved in your face.

On a positive note - they do offer activities and have a board up where you an sign up - this helps, as the more people go the cheaper things are. We went on the dolphin sunset boat trip - we didn't see dolphins and they did reduce the cost of the trip for us - down from about US$35 - US$21 each.

Maafushi itself was a little disappointing. The village is ok, with shops and restaurants on the beach. The beach area where you can wear bikini is lovely and there are a couple of drink trolleys on the beach serving fresh coconuts, etc.. It is interesting to walk around and see the prison and the rubbish dump, etc... and good to go for a jog in the morning. The beach areas are cleaner than other islands we have been to and it was interesting to see all the women out cleaning on the Friday afternoon. The snorkelling off the beach was good, but can be shallow at times. I wish guesthouses would tell you about things to do on the island - like where is best to snorkel - instead of trying to get you to pay to get off the island. The Sun tan hotel offered day trips to picnic islands, posh resorts, etc...

Talking with the management later in our stay it seems that their priority is money and I think in order to make their hotel better they need to think more about their customers. If I was not tied into my booking.com reservation I would have changed guesthouse.

One of the unfortunate things about Maafushi - is that the tourists there forget that it is a Muslim country and are walking round skimpily clad, a few thongs on the beach and too much displays of affection.

We has a great stay here, our room was clean and beautiful just right at the beach side, everyday we got to see stunning sea view. The staffs there are friendly and nice, and helpful too. We specially thanks to Mohamed for all his arrangement for us, sunrise - sand bank, sunset - Dolphins and beach dinner with romantic decorations! The bad thing is that we only stay there for 2 nights and there are still many excursions we haven't try out such as whale shark and Manta rays seeing, night fishing, resort trip and picnic island. We would definitely come back again and we are very happy to recommend them to our friends! :)

We booked at Stingray and we were given an option to move to Suntan stating its new and better. The rooms were clean at first and we had the street view from our balcony which we used just to dry our clothes.

Food was substandard and expensive. It takes forever and few items we ordered never made to the table, but the bill. Had to correct the bill twice. The staff at the restaurant were very rude and they serve only for the people who pay them extra money, which we learnt later. Had food just once on our 4 nights stay here.

the activities looks cheaper when compared to the other hotels, so were the life jackets.

I noticed, everything inside the hotel is made from china, from AC's to Hair Dryers. We stayed in the second floor, and the AC was at 18 degrees and we were sweating all day inside the room. Complained with no good response.

I would say the room and the bathroom were clean and they changed the sheets everyday.

But they have to improve the hospitality a lot. I will never come back and stay here again. There are very good hotels at this island at a far cheaper price.

Thanks to Mohammed who kept a smiling face all the time and hope things improve here. I guess the beach view rooms must be good here.

Room Tip: beach view room dont eat at the restaurant

We moved here for the remaining two nights after the horrible experience at other hotel in Maafushi (read previous review).

When we went in to inquire, we were warmly welcomed by Mohammed, the owner. He certainly knows the art of marketing. On repeated requests to quote the tariff, he insisted that we have a look at the room first. We agreed, there... we fell in love with the room. As, I was not without a staying place, I had nothing to lose, and asked for an affordable deal. It struck!.. He obliged.

Now, for the room -
- View: Excellent sea facing... The hotel is right next to the sea!
- Comfort: Excellent... Spick and span room, balcony and bathroom.
- Restaurant.. Excellent... All our special request of food and tea were taken care of warmly
- Activities.. Excellent snorkelling arranged.... You need to see those colourful corals and fish to believe.
- Billing.. Excellent.. as promised..no hidden charges.

We stayed at the hotel for 4days and 3nyts. The hotel was new and it was very clean. The rooms were well cleaned and spacious. We had a sea view and the balcony added to the ambiance of the room.

The staff were very friendly and they took time to chat with us every time we saw them.

A little problem with communication. Probably because they had an accent when they speak english.

It would have helped a lot if the menu had some pictures so guests would have an idea of how the food looked like. We found it a bit difficult to explain how we wanted the food cooked. But generally they tried their best to serve the food the way we wanted it.

The tour guides, especially, Ali, was very friendly and fun to be with. He accompanied us for our snorkelling and picnic island trip and he was so fun to be with.

Special mention also goes to Hassan, the reservations manager, and the front desk guy. I forgot his name. But everybody was very accomodating and friendly.

I would highly recommend the Sun Tan Beach Hotel in Maafushi for all types of travellers. Young and old, single and families.

Thank you Sun Tan. We had a grand time.

Room Tip: Highly recommend the sea view room at the second floor.
