We arrived in time for the sunset - as recommended by the staff when we were booking the meal. Good food from starters thru to main course. So much so that the sweet trolly was not required.

We went to the African Reef last year and I posted a bad review on Trip Advisor and e-mailed the restaurant. They contacted me and I agreed to give them a 2nd chance - in their favour they offerred a free meal, which I refused and was happy to pay for 3 children and four adults a month later. Knowing it was me they were wonderful. Catered for the kids, service was great etc. I returned on 16th November 2013 with 6 adults and 3 kids booked under my married name. The kids games and special service had vanished - the service was appalling. We booked this restaurant because of the views - the windows were so dirty that the 2 photographers had to go outside to get sunset photos. Service was incredibly slow. They refused to take mains orders until they had decided to clear entrees. They were aggressive in their explanation that pork belly took 35 mins. After telling us that 3 mains were unavailable - we all chose the pork belly - at no time were we told it would take 35 mins when we ordered until we all told the waitress that we were hungry. I am a good cook .. the pork belly was a grey lump of boiled fat. No-one can cook a good pork belly in 35 mins - it has to be crisp on the top and tender throughout. Some of us waited nearly 2 hours to eat. We regret now that a 2 of us ordered entrees.. My daughter regrets that the hostess ambushed her on the way back to the table from the toilet to remind her that 35 mins was needed for pork belly. Here's news, the evening was awful, we didn't order desserts or coffee (goodbye any upselling). We stopped ordering drinks - no-one wanted to drink hungry. This was my wedding day and no, I didn't forewarn them of that. But sheeesh it was terrible. I regret now that I removed my original complaint. If I had booked under my maiden name maybe I would have got the good service and meal they gave me to take the complaint off TripAdvisor. What a shame. A waste of good location and a waste of all the trouble they took last time to get my complaint off TripAdvisor. The booking was in the name of Bastion - my new husband's name.

This felt to me like a hidden gem as no locals had mentioned it the six weeks I've been in town. So glad we found this lovely restaurant with a fabulous ocean view and a meal to equal the surroundings. Seafood platter and crispy skin Burramundi where our choice for mains. Dessert was devine you must not leave without trying one on these. The wonderful food and beverage manager made our experience delightful with a professional and friendly manner. Would recommend to anyone ... one suggestion clean the windows to enhance it further.
