Having stayed at several of the popular B&B’s in Margaret River I can confidently say that James and Joanna Llewellin’s place is the only contender for best B&B in this area. In the inimitable words of the Kurgan in the Highlander movie (the excellent original, before they all started riding around on space skateboards) – “There can be only One”. It turns out that although the Kurgan made lots of noise he was not actually The One – that title was reserved for Connor MacLeod of the clan MacLeod, an unassuming contender who used his superior skill (and a little bit of angst it has to be said) to defeat the Kurgan in battle.

The same is true of the fierce competition between MR guesthouses to ‘win’ the coveted number 1 spot on Tripadvisor - but Llewellin’s is superior in every aspect. Their stylish attention to detail and passion for excellence are evident in the perfectly appointed guestrooms, the amazingly fresh and delicious breakfasts ala James, and the way they go the extra mile for their guests – from arranging private wine tastings to securing restaurant reservations, and using their network to open doors and generate a warm welcome wherever you go in town.

It is clear to anybody who stays here that this is a labour of love – James and Joanna take great pride in their house and their reputation. Stepping inside is like stepping into your own front room – or at least what you’d like your front room to feel like if you had a bright airy space full of beautiful paintings, which opened out to a serene bushscape full of native birds...

We stayed in the spa room which is the last in the row of three guest rooms. All of them are broadly similar in size and style and amenities, so it doesn’t matter much which room you pick or are given. Some things are obvious and you’ll notice right away, like the high quality Sheridan bathtowels and the olive oil soaps, and other things you won’t notice but will appreciate later – like the heavy duty toilet paper (nothing worse than flimsy toilet paper!) , and blackout curtains which guarantee you a sunlight-free doze in the morning.

James elevates the humble breakfast to new levels of excellence – everything is either homemade (like his macerated fruit compote, and raspberry muffins), or locally produced (everything else, including the Yallingup wood-fired breads), with the only exception being the baked beans! Even the feta cheese he uses in his wonderful bacon and feta omelettes is from Meredith Farm – one of the finest feta cheeses in the land. And if you wonder why the mushrooms taste so good that’s because he uses the best local olive oil and butter to cook them in. You won’t get better anywhere – not even in the finest of 5-star hotels – because the key ingredients here are Heart and Soul…

You may well find yourself short of time to cover all the things you had on your ‘to do’ list because hanging around talking after breakfast is much more fulfilling than racing to yet another wine tasting - and returning early to chat over a glass of wine or just lounge around in your super-comfy room are appealing ways to spend time. Staying at Llewellin’s is a bit like staying with friends – cool friends who want to show you a good time.

Once Connor MacLeod overcame the Kurgan he was awarded ‘The Prize’ which allowed him to become mortal and blend in with ordinary men – but of course, no matter how hard he tried, he was always that bit more gifted, special and different. And so it is in the jostle for position amongst the Margaret River guesthouses. There could be more than just one extraordinary place to stay, but there isn’t. Even if they sound similar, look similar and receive similar reviews, there really is only One.

Joanna and James could not have been more welcoming after a long drive down from Perth. Lily the Maltese Terrier could be a bit more welcoming but she is adorable once she's settled down. The breakfast was excellent (the salmon & scrambled eggs is a must) and the rooms are spacious and clean.

We occupied the veranda room which is amazing in the afternoons where galahs and parrots feed on seed just outside our window.

My wife is someone who is not easily impressed by the hospitality industry but we both agree that this is deservedly the top spot when it comes to B&B's in the Margaret River.

We have stayed at many B&Bs but James and Joanna's secluded oasis does top the charts! :)

We wanted to treat ourselves to a relaxed baby moon before junior makes his brave new entrance into our world, and our wonderful hosts were certainly very sweet ensuring that this MTB and DTB had a great time.

Location - Only a 10 min drive from MR and very central to the vineyards, caves and whales! We loved the secluded location as we had the treat of a lovely landscape garden with birds, kangaroos (sometimes) and an adorable doggie!

Rooms - Gorgeous and very clean with all the necessary functionalities including some additional treats such as room heating, a heated bed, a heated and very spacious bathroom, a cheese board + knife etc. It was a very nicely apportioned room and we spent many relaxing hours in it reading, watching master chef and just relaxing in the candle-lit room! Oh yes, love the olive oil toiletries!

Breakfast - Amazing spread including poached pears, freshly cut fruits, toasted artisan breads, home-made jams (fig, lemon, ginger etc), feta cheese and crispy bacon omelette, smoked salmon etc - It was seriously good and absolutely faultless! The best part is that James would leave extra portions of his gourmet muffins (raspberry and white chocolate) above the common fridge - nice touch! But as my dear husband would say, the best part of any meal is the company and the company of James & Joanna were genuinely the best part of the meal! Oh yes, if we were not rained out, we would have used the BBQ in the backyard!

We hope to be back but maybe to say hello with junior for now until we can convince doting grandparents to take care of him while mummy and daddy take a little escapade!

All the best to James and Joanna because you really gave us the best!

Room Tip: All good :)

My wife and I stayed at Llewellins last week for 3 nights in the Spa room. We are not normally B&B fans, but from the second we arrived till we left everything was Outstanding. We had perfect hosts, very knowledgable about the area and the latest news. Room was lovely and clean, excellent quality bedding/towels etc. Breakfast was increadable, what a cook!.

We will only stay here for our future trips to Margaret River area.

James and Joanna exceeded our expectations.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent.

This is our first B and B experience with hotels being the norm and let me say this experience is ranked right up there for memorable stays for us. We were totally chilled and relaxed after our 2 night stay which included taking in James' personal wine tour and his recommendations for our Dinner experience at Morrie's and Wills Domain.....wow is all I an say. Considering staying? then you will totally enjoy their hospitality, conversation and breakfasts, (and cheese platter if you have room) and if not then you're a statue!!
Thank you Joanna and James we will come and stay again, Steven and Linda
