“Movie night at a vineyard ”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2014 via mobile

On our arrival at Margaret River, our friends treated us to the movie night at Cape Mentelle. With a picnic like setting, rugs/bean bags were set up among groups.

As the film didn't start till it got dark, there was lovely singer entertaining the crowd which was a fantastic way to kick off the evening (I believe the singer may be selective nights/weather dependent).

Now seeing that our friends did organise this for us I'm unsure of the value to this outing.
We did choose to eat there and decided on the pizza which were reasonably priced and tasty.

Cape Mentelles wines were sold at a good price too.
We thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor setting for the viewing of a film.

“How rude !!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 November 2013

We went to Maragret River for my 50th in May this year, looking forward to experiencing the internationally acclaimed wineries in the region... We got caught in torrential rains along the way and arrived late in Margaret River..

The first winery we visited was Cape Mentelle and after such a bad experience, were ready to head on back to Perth & forget about the wineries. We were so appalled that we have not forgotten the bad experience, months later.

There were 2 ladies on the counter in the cellar that afternoon. From the moment we walked in, we received cold looks from both of them. We asked if they were still open and if we had time to sample some of their wines. We were told that they'd be closing in around15 minutes, but yes, we could sample some wines.

There were no other customers, as a couple was just finishing off their tasting, as we walked in. They left with no sales. One of the ladies poured us a wine, giving us no information about it, and walked off saying that it was cold and that she better put another log on the fire.. I thought they were closing in 15 minutes??

We tasted the wine and waited for her to return so that we could sample the next wine. She didn't return to the counter. She stayed in front of the fire, warming her back as she made small talk with her colleague, making it obvious that they had no interest in attending to us.

My best friend of 30 years, just looked and me and said "let's go.. It's obvious they can't be bothered". Sadly... it was true..

We left and neither of the ladies acknowledged that we were even there. . No questions, no farewell.. I guess they were happy to see us go.. If it was due to our arrival being close to closing time, we would have preferred their honesty and a polite apology that it was late, rather than such rude behavior.

We then went to EagleVale winery, where they were in no hurry to close and we were welcomed and treated in a sincerely courteous and friendly manner.. Of course they got our sales. A couple of dozen bottles shipped back to Melbourne and a few bottles for our stay in W.A.

The following day we went to Cullen's Winery, where we were treated even better. The staff at Cullen's went out of their way to accommodate our request for something to nibble on, whilst we sampled their beautiful wines. They got us some fruit, cheese and crackers to have with our wine tasting, even though this was not something on offer or on their menu. They were friendly, warm, smiling and entertaining. Not only did we have a wonderful experience, we had around $800 worth of their amazing wines, shipped back home.. And of course a couple of bottles for our stay.. Cheers to Cullen's !!!

Perhaps Cape Mental staff should take some lessons in common courtesy & customer service from the Cullen's & Eagle Vale.

“Excellent wines and tasting experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2013

One of the better tasting experiences I've had. Robert was clearly knowledgeable and passionate about his wines (and golf). He allowed us to taste and experience the wines before discussing the tasting characteristics, not like a lot of other wineries which tell you what you're supposed to taste before the wine even enters the mouth (feels sometimes very impersonal and that we're on some kind of conveyor belt). Roberto's attention to detail and willingness to explain and discuss made our day.
