Owner description: Mammoth is an impressive, gothic-like cave that could easily be described as the perfect home for a caveman. Tours are self-guided with an audio headset and begin via an elevated boardwalk through towering Karri forest. As you journey through the spectacular formations lookout for the carefully lit animal bones and fossils and listen to the stories about extinct animals. Wildflowers are abundant around the precinct from September to November. Located 22km south of Margaret River.

Great cave to go to if you are a bit worried about confined spaces. You see all the beautiful formations but in a large area.

Mammoth cave provides an insight into the history of this area. The cave was easily navigated and with the recorded guide to listen to, providing you with interesting facts about the cave formation and it's inhabitants over a lengthy historical period.

It is fascinating to understand that you are walking past bones of giant marsupials some 40,000 years old. Yep, there they are just poking out of the ground, just like the animal passed away and was buried yesterday.

This was my first cave and it is self guided - take your time and it is the most wonderful experience walking in the steps of animals now long departed and extinct - just let your imagination run wild and you are there amongst them all.

Great experience. Not your most beautiful, it is just the sheer size and the archaeological remains that makes this cave a brilliant stop.

Took my 8 year old for a lesson on stalactites & stalagmites but found the cave somewhat creepy! We learnt the history of the Mammoth Cave from the audio player at the numbered stop points as it was a self guided tour. There was a lot of climbing on the stairs in the cave and it can be quite hectic. But the cave itself was impressive with the overhanging stalactites where it looked mysterious in the dark. As we came out, the trees up there was a welcoming sight....but we had to walk a bit as the exit from the cave was across the road from the entry.

Both my wife and I love visiting caves, so we jumped at the opportunity on our recent day trip to visit this cave, which is very close to Margaret River, and the place we stayed- Dunsborough.
We did a self-guided tour, and were supplied with headphones and a miniature MP3 player with information about the cave.
You can easily spend 45 minutes to an hour exploring, and there are quite a few steps, which are not too steep.
The walk back however, does follow a steep climb, before a relatively easy few hundred metres back to the entrance and car park.

A great time, and another cave crossed off our "to do"list!

Thank you
