We found the staff & facilities very good with the atmosphere a bonus. The king size bed in Cabinet was a treat as we were given an upgrade from the queen size room down stairs. All in all our stay was good.

We stayed at Basildene on our honeymoon this year, and were pleasantly suprised with the place. The grounds are immaculately kept, and the colours were beautiful this time of year. We even saw a bandicoot! That said, the building itself is gorgeous, but it's really just another hotel. Expensive breakfasts, too-soft beds etc. The TV reception in the room was shocking, and the "DVD/video library" is very limited. I don't know who picks the DVDs, but it looks like they chose the absolute bottom of the barrel flicks.
However, it was super-close to the centre of town, and it was very easy to get to all the wineries/restaurants/bushwalks that we wanted to do.

I lasted visited Basildene Manor 4 years ago with family. Understaffed and crying out for investment then, but with with potential.

Stayed again a week ago on the assurance that Accor's purchase of the property had made a difference. Was hard to detect ! The lobby is fresher, but the bedrooms and rest of the coomon parts are tired eg rust showing through on the drawing room ceiling. Most things are self service which for $280 a night or more is not ideal.

If Accor did a proper refurb and paid a bit more attention to service, this could yet be a lovely property. I just have a worrying feeling I'll be writing the same review in 2013.

We've heard a lot about this place and decided to stay there a few nights when we were last down at MR.
The room we chose & booked was based on photos shown on their website. Unfortunately the room we were allocated wasnt quite what we expected. It was small and rather dark even during sunny days. The furniture didnt quite fit in the room eg the 2 lounge chairs were squashed side by side in a space between the bath room door and the TV cabinet. The chairs were useless for reading (no natural light nor reading light). We could not watch the TV from these chairs as they were facing the wrong way.
The continental buffet and cooked breakfasts (included) were very good. Good buffet selection and excellent menu for hot food - all well cooked and very good quality.
The place also offer set menu dinner on Sat nights with BYO. We decided to give it a go since the breakfasts were so good. That was a wrong assumption. Food was very ordinary and for the price we paid, we could have a more interesting meal in one of the great restaurants in town.

Booked at last minute on Wotif and got below $200 a night. Beuatiful room in the old part of the hous e- if this was the smallest room the others must be huge! King bed and bathroom corner room with views across garden. Lovely breakfast buffet in pretty conservatory. Helpful staff - $5 taxi into town. Close to Cape Mentelle vineyard.
