“Rude, rude, rude”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2010

My word is the lonely planet spot on with its description of this place. The lady at the front desk had the audacity of telling us off for not bringing our passports with us. Last time I checked backpackers accomodation didn't require interntional idenification. She also threatened to not let us stay because of our passports were back in Tauranga where we live. When questioned as to why we "should" have had our passports on us she replied "incase you are in an accident and we like to see who is staying in our house". How a passport will help you in an accident I'm not sure and maybe she thinks that terrorists will have a special stamp in their passports. Not that terrorists would come to New Zealand as it's so empty.

It was a pretty building but it didnt quite make up for the fact that the lady at the front desk was horrendously rude.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2009

We booked one night at Sunkist to break up our long journey from Gisborne to Paihia because it was conveniently located on our route, more or less. We booked using Hotelbookers a we had for other backpacker accommodation so we were quite taken aback to be greeted with a lecture and a surcharge when we checked in. The lady at the front desk complained openly that she has to pay commission to Hostelbookers for our reservation and that since we were paying by card she would also have to pay commission to MasterCard. Then the balance we were quoted was increased because she alleges our quoted rate was BBH and YHA Members' rate only. There was no word of any of this on Hostelbookers and no such similar complaint at previous accommodation. Not a very welcoming start!

Facilities are very good - clean kitchen and dining areas, lovely garden with a range of seating options, internet access, guest laundry, large tv lounge, coffee and a pool table. Our private room was clean and tidy with a pleasant view over the garden. Bathroom facilities are unisex and communal but there are enough toilets and showers for the size of the accommodation. The usual YHA rules and regulations are posted throughout the accommodation, main benefit being no noise during the night.

Check out was marginally better than check in, but we weren't spared a small lecture in the morning either - this time because we hadn't brought our towels down to reception and had locked the bedroom door. Our apologies for this delay to check out (we hadn' engaged our ability to mind read that day!)

If you can get past the lists of rules and regulations, joke threats of death if caught feeding the dog, and the rude check in staff the accommodation is actually a lovely place to stay with decent facilities and in a great location for easy access on foot to the town, supermarket, coastal path. Plenty of free on-street parking is available too. Resident allergen-free curly cat and very friendly dog are pleasant fixtures at the accommodation (if you like cats and dogs, of course!)

  • Liked — Good range of well maintained facilities, lovely garden, great location.
  • Disliked — Rude staff, lit of rules and regulations.
