“Nice, Good Location & Great Friendly Staff”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

Great friendly managers/staff/owners who were very helpful and accommodating. They held a room for me over the phone with no deposit/CC details even though I was arriving late and they were nearly full, and when I arrived provided great friendly service. I stayed in a double room that had all the amenities and mod cons I required and was clean. I was a little concerned initially as it was on the corner of the main and side road however there was very little road noise inside the room so had a good nights sleep. Would recommend and stay again.

We stayed here overnight while attending a family reunion and found it was ideal for our stay.
We had made a phone booking a couple of weeks in advance and found everything was as described to us over the phone. The person we spoke to on the phone and the receptionist who checked us in were polite and helpful.
We had a studio room with lots of space and the kitchenette was ideal for organising our breakfast. The bathroom was compact but well set up and like everything else, was very clean and well maintained.
The motel is just outside the main CBD but we found it easy walking to everything in the centre of town.
Other reviewers have mentioned traffic noise and although our room faced the main road, the traffic noise did not disturb us and we slept well.
We would be happy to stay there again.

Arriving here on a very wet and windy Monday night in Thames wasn't the best way to get an impression of this motel but the welcome was lovely and once we had cranked up the heating we started to feel at what was to be our base and home on the Coromandel for a week. We had at one stage in our planning to spend only one or two nights here and then a night in Coromandel Town and a night in Whitianga. In the event we drove around the Coromandel in a day and Thames became our base. The Motel is a 10 minute walk to the centre of town and 3 minutes drive to the local Pack and Save supermarket which is open until 7.30pm in the winter and is well stocked. There are plenty of restaurants for all tastes within 15 minutes walk of the motel. Most have very good reputations if not heavily patronised in the winter months with few tourists being around. The owners are very friendly and helpful and our rooms were kept extremely clean with fresh towels everyday.

Our group stayed in a number of the rooms at Shortland Court Motel. I was in a family unit which was dated, uncomfortable and needed a good clean. Our friends stayed in a studio unit which was nice, newly built and clean. The motel is situated on the main road which is REALLY NOISY!! The lady at reception was sour. I wouldn't stay there again!

Room Tip: Ask for one the newer units as the old rooms are terrible.

I was a bit skeptic before booking because of the claims of the 1 star reviews. I was pretty struck to see that the motel is actually very comfortable, the room is big and with everything you need, including a fully equipped kitchenette (microwave and stove as well), big TV, a quite big bathroom and a desk. It's true it's on the main road but despite being light sleepers, we didn't get woken up by the traffic. Everything was a lot cleaner and neater than in many other nz motels (we just completed our second month in the country, travelling from north to south, we have stayed in plenty of worse places on the same price bucket).
The owner is so nice, very welcoming, the cat was asleep, everything worked. She told me the story of the lady behind one very nasty review, how this was her vendetta for not being able to cancel the room on no charge (why would she??) , how she wrecked the room before leaving. It made me angry at how certain people, use tripadvisor in a malicious way.

Having read the 1* reviews, we came properly prepared with body armour for the cat and motion-sensor lights to keep the burglars at bay. Thankfully the cat was away (probably at anger management classes) and while we covered the TV in blankets to avoid shrapnel wounds, in the event, it didn't even explode. We can report a rather savage-looking Bichon Frise that came on a bit heavy from behind a plate glass window: presumably that explains why the burglars stay away these days?

It is true that the proprietress did not ask us to become Facebook friends when we left and seemed to expect us just to check out without giving us a sentimental farewell. Our hostess seemed pretty stone-cold sober but felt it would have been OK anyway as we didn't have to ask her to perform neurosurgery or to fly a plane.

The rooms were clean, well-equipped and large. A bit close to the main road, that's all.

I had searched for accommodation for our last night in New Zealand and found Shortland Court Motel online. I booked it without much research and we were very happy with everything. The motel is very clean and comfortable and the King size bed was the most comfortable we had slept in. The bathroom was large with a magnificent shower and even though we didn't cook we could have if we had wanted to. We could park our car right at the front door which was also great. If we are every travelling to Thames we would definitely stay there again as it is close to town.
