“Was good but would like to see more.”
Reviewed 7 April 2013

We were met by a lovely man who told us the history of the gold era. He showed us the battery and got the machine working. He explained how the gold was extracted. He explained the layout of the museum and took us for an underground tour of the mine. That was exellent. We studied the many old photos of the mines how they looked when they were being worked. There are old buildings and machinery every where and it is all explained fairly well. Would like to have seen more of the machinery which was laying around displayed better and signage explaining how it worked and what it was used for. We finished with some gold panning which was cool fun. Had a great time there.

“Just amazing”
Reviewed 25 February 2013

I so enjoyed this - well worth the visit. Really gives you a feel for what the mining days were like in Thames. You get to go into old mine shafts and also see a stamper battery in action. Back in the day there were over 600 of them in Thames operating 24/6 - the collective noise must have been staggering, going by the racket that just one put out! Highly recommended

“Great tour!”
Reviewed 4 November 2012

I really enjoyed this guided tour that has lasted at least 50 minutes:after walking through a gold mine tunnel wearing a helmet(bring adequate shoes because it can be a little muddy),I discovered an operational 19th century stamper battery and did a self-guided tour to explore the photographic museum, view a video presentation and steam-powered machines.

Thanks to the manager or the guide? who is a fount of knowledge and has a real sense of humour,I discovered a lot of topics about NZ mining history, geology and mineralogy, formation of gold commonly associated with silver, its uses....and French history!!

Highly recommended!
