While we've visited the homestead as day visitors before this was our first overnight stay. The home is set in an amazing rainforest which has been extensively predator fenced to protect the rare and precious native birds that now live here. We saw stitchbirds, saddlebacks and the NZ Robin which are all endangered. The Robins were almost landing on us. We stayed in Room 2 which has antique decor. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean and tidy. The host was incredibly friendly and we enjoyed our continental breakfast the next morning after a walk in the forest.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 2 which has a view over the valley, you can lie in bed and watch the sunrise.

My fiance and I held our wedding ceremony (outside) and function (parlour) here, we were not disappointed with the venue, service and attentiveness of Viv and Theo. The setting in the wildlife reserve is fantastic and the homestead just beautiful.
They catered for seventy five guests during the evening and provided for booked out accommodation over night with breakfasts the following morning.
Cost was very reasonable, with a high degree of flexibility regarding food and refreshment options.
We have no hestitation in recommending to other couples as a venue for their celebration!
Two things to keep in mind, the reserve is open to the public so be prepared for 'visitors' up until your function starting and secondly, make sure your instrustions are clear and confirmed to avoid an misunderstandings.

Room Tip: Stay in the homestead, the backpackers accommodation doesn't have the same appeal.

Bushy Park is a 100-year-old former mansion on what used to be a large sheep farm. It is now part of a small local nature conservancy that includes remarkable old growth rain forest (more about that later). The mansion has been converted to a small hotel (6 guest rooms) and conference center. We were there at a very off-season time (late winter, mid-week) and were the only guests that night, which was both good and bad. Good in that we got incredibly personalized service from the inn-keepers, Viv and Theo. Bad in that not all of the public rooms were open, owing to the cold weather and the need to minimize the use of heat in such a rambling old building.

There is a plot of rainforest behind the house and we decided to take a walk through it, using the marked trails and a map that Viv had given us. We did fine until we reached a point where we had to exit the rainforest, cross part of a meadow and then find another path back into the forest. We simply could not find the 2nd path, it was getting colder and, most troubling, it was getting near dark. Finally in desperation I used my cell phone (had to climb a ridge to get a signal) and called NZ emergency dispatch (111). They patched me through to the hotel and, after explaining our predicament to Viv, she came out to fetch us. We had picked up a lot of mud in our walk (the trails had deteriorated over the course of the winter) and Viv even washed some of our dirty clothes, while Theo helped me clean our boots. Viv also cooked us a hot dinner and then Theo joined us in the lounge as we watched that night's Rugby World Cup match.

I share these details to give some idea of the great hospitality we enjoyed.

I really have only two complaints about Bushy Park but both should be considered in context. One is that if you're in NZ in the winter, maybe this wouldn't be your first choice unless you wanted a country experience. It's cold outside and in a house like this, it's cold inside as well, despite the generous use of space heaters.

The second issue is that the inn has shared bathrooms, which we were not aware of when we booked. Since we were the only guests, it didn't matter too much, except that it was a long walk down the hall to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night. We could have asked for a room closer to the bathrooms, but we had by far the best and biggest room in the house and we were reluctant to give it up for the bathroom.

But as long as the traveler knows what to expect, especially in winter, Bushy Park is a great place to try something different in New Zealand.

Room Tip: Ask for what used to be the owner's master bedroom at the front of the house - it's huge, beautiful and has a great view.
