We drove the River Road from Wanganui to Rataehi via Pipiriki. What an awesome drive. We did not hurry and stopped many times just to take in the scenery. Well worth it all. A step back in time.

We experienced the jetboat and walking tour to the Bridge to Nowhere. During the 2 hours we spent walking through the bush we heard maybe 12 bird songs in all that time. The bush was virtually silent. Very sad.

We canoed the Wanganui River trip from Whakahoro to Pipiriki over 3 days in December and loved the section through the national park. The scenery is specular, the birds plentiful and loud and the river so empty most of the time that its one of the most peaceful places that I've been. The river has a few rapids but beginner canoeists seemed to pick up skills quickly and the river moves fast enough that you don't need to canoe that much! The huts are basic but the warden and other travelers there make it the stay fun. A great trip even for those who've never tried canoeing but have some fitness and love the outdoors.

Hints: Of you're a light sleeper, take ear plugs for the hut or campsite as snoring sounds travel far even outdoors! Although canoes can take lots of weight, you have to carry it to the hut/campsite everyday so don't take more then you need.

The best way to experience the National Park is to canoe the river stopping off at the DOC huts along the route. A five day comfortable trip.Hire canoes from one of the many canoe hire firms in the Park area. Take the chance to explore the tramping tracks along the way, especially the Bridge to Nowhere.
The river region is full of history both Maori and Pakeha which add to the back to nature experience. Take the time to explore Pipiriki and the settlements along the River Road on the way back into Wanganui, especially the village of Jerusalem where one of NZ's greatest poets, JK Baxter, had a commune.
