“A Hidden Heaven. A Must Visit. 10/5!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 November 2012

If you can stay more than a night DO IT. One is definitely not enough. John and Annette are the most hospitable and friendliest hosts I've ever encountered.

Getting there is off the beaten track. The cable car is a must. It's such a kitsch way to get in there.

The cottages themselves are authentically rustic, but not at all without creature comforts. They are beautifully decorated and situated in great forest surroundings.

They have a 'mini store' there with some home made produce, frozen and fresh food if you got caught out in prepared (like we did) - I'd recommend going prepared with food of your own. Plenty of cooking options are available there.

I'd also recommend a canoe down the river. It was an easy 3.5 hours and beautiful to float down and see the cliffs, trees, sheep, goats and even wild pigs!

A perfect romantic getaway for any couple. Wholeheartedly recommend. Thanks again to our hosts!!

Awesome place, great location and view from every point, royalty food, more than friendly staff and fantastic dog. Look for a place to rest? try the fire-bath looking at the stars or go for a bush walk at the rithm of the hundreds diferent birds. Ecofriendly Relax.

Arriving by flying fox was the intoduction to a fabulous family weekend. The property is nestled into the hillside above the river, providing beautiful views of the river itself. Our cottage was extremely comfortable and cosy with a number of areas to simply sit and relax and soak in the view or cuddle up with a good book, mag or some Baxter poetry. The outdoor areas are picturesque and the 100 year old walnut trees provide a natural canopy to the large outdoor dining area. The house is fully equiped (including excellent quality coffee) organic milk and filtered water. The property also stocks a number of delicious homemade preserves, fresh baked bread, home made ice cream and a goood selection of New Zealand wines and beers. In our 3 day/2 night stay (which I highly recommend as1 day simply is not enough) we undertook a 16K kayak downriever which was all organised by your very helpful and friendly host, John. The trip included a delicious lunch of huge homemade muffins, quality coffee and homemade lemon squash for the kids. It is a must see and experience destination and excellent value for such an isloated and unique experience. Our family will most definately be returning with others in tow as we so want to share this fabulous place.

Room Tip: There are two cottages, both are gorgous and unique. There is also a little gypsey caravan style car...

We three sisters, Pam, Nell and Jill, spent two beautiful nights and days at the Flying Fox. Rustic and unspoilt, comfortable and cosy, it certainly is a little slice of paradise. The James K cabin wrapped us together and for a couple of days we escaped the rest of the world. We wandered along the path through the garden and into the bushland, sat in seclusion at the old camp ground and bathed in the sun that shone through the ferns. We loved the experience and look forward to returning one day. Thankyou Annette and John, you made us feel so welcome and we wanted for nothing.

We stayed for just one night in the Glory Cart and thoroughly enjoyed it. The river road is a beautiful drive, and then you cross the river on theflying fox to the other side. It is extremely well set up and the owners are great. Perfect for a peaceful night or two and a few lovely walks from the garden.

Amazing place! Over the river by a 'flying fox' - a cabin suspended on a cable to be met by John who is an ex-hippy and one of the nicest people you could wish to meet. Despite of (or because of?) his background he runs an excellent, comfortable place which is a dream to stay at. There is a small store, but otherwise it is self-service. So bring your favourite food and wine! Also enjoy the river.

I almost don't want to review The Flying Fox for fear it'll get too popular... but for the sake of Annette and John, I will.

We stayed for 2 nights in December, and loved it. Accessible from the beautiful Whanganui River Road only by cable car (the flying fox) or river, The Flying Fox is peaceful, beautiful and a joy. Accommodation is built from reclaimed materials and is rustic but very comfortable, with views over the river and valley.

We spent a great afternoon canoeing on the river and saw not one other person or boat. The trip was made even better by the plunger coffee and homemade raspberry muffins at the halfway point, and John even met us with beers at the final pick-up.

We chose to go fully-catered (there's not much else close by!) and were provided with amazing food prepared by Annette which we cooked ourselves- rack of NZ lamb, baby chicken, homemade ice cream. Annette was not around much whilst we were there but John was great- interesting, helpful, and very friendly. And Billy the dog made the stay!

I really cannot recommend this place enough: we felt very welcome, very at home, and utterly relaxed. Book now- but not when we want to go back!
