The Red Lion Inn is a Wanganui icon. It has been around forever and has returned once again to it's glory days. It is lovely to have the friendly owners smiling from behind the bar and the staff are efficient in their work.
There is food, a Café menu and a more up-market restaurant upstairs. They have 'specials' nights with pasta or burgers being the main fare. Fantastic bands often play on a Friday night and they have sports playing on the tv screens in the public bar if that is your thing.
Lovely river views are accessed from the river balcony - where there is seating available.

Thank Kerry C

We had a nice meal here, sitting in the enclosed balcony area, with the gas heaters. The food was lovely, the service was prompt and friendly. I like the couch area inside, where we moved to after dinner while we finished our wines

The Red Lion Inn was the setting for a major dinner at our family reunion,Wanganui, in January 2013. They handled a rather large group with aplomb. We had our own room upstairs and our own bar staff. There was a set menu because of the size of the group but the food was excellent. Drinks were reasonably priced and the atmosphere was good. Highly recommended.

The Red Lion Inn sits on the banks of the Whanganui River, just along the road from the historic Durie Hill Lift (the only elevator in the world that runs up inside a hill). The Inn has been a popular place to drop in for a drink for many years, now, under local ownership again, it has become an even more popular spot for travellers and locals for both a quiet drink and a meal on the outside deck as they watch the river and the passage of the paddle steamer the Waimarie and the unique flat bottomed (1904) specially built river boats along the river.
We enjoyed the ambience of the bar and a substantial meal there as we celebrated a family reunion in the city.
The Red Lion gave us good value for our drinks and food. Wouldrecommend for that quiet, liesurely lunch or evening meal or, even, a drink and snack as one drives through Wanganui on the way north up the Paraparas to Ruapehu and winter skiing.
