Stayed for two nights. Service was OK and the room was clean enough, rates were reasonable. The location is quiet but out of Whangarei (which we wanted) but don't recommend if you don't have your own transport. Pool is only 1 metre deep and quite small, so that was a bit disappointing. Was OK overall but would probably try somewhere else next time.

Really enjoyed the stay as it is in a quiet location with lovely gardens and harbour view.
Swimming pool & spa pool were great. A good menu selection and the food was great. Would be a good hotel option for families as well as couples or business stay. The rooms are large and have everything you need. The hotel is is a few years old but in good order and very clean & tidy. Suggest you request a room with harbour views.

Room Tip: Request a room with harbour views.

We stayed at Flames for one night to break up the drive from the far north back to Auckland. The hotel (a large conference hotel) is quite dated and tired although they have tried to give the rooms a little facelift with some fresh paint, modern linen etc. The rooms are large, clean and comfortable. We chose it because all of the motels in Whangarei seemed pretty old and yuck. We were only the second group to stay at the hotel that night and so it was very quiet. It was a Sunday and the manager wasn't able to recommend anywhere in Whangarei to have dinner - said everything would be closed including the pub next door. Turned out the pub next door was serving bar meals and a number of places in Whangarei proper (a good 5 min drive away) were open (and listed in the dining out booklet the manager gave us as open!) He should do his homework. Although a bit out of the way (you will need a car to get around) Flames is fine for a stopover.

We stayed at Flames on our first night in New Zealand, the manager Robin was helpful with travel advice and generally made us welcome. The hotel presents as very clean and the rooms have a nice aspect through the very well kept gardens to the river beyond. The hotel is in good condition, but is not bright and new, its more 70's and functional.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room to get a better view of the river.

We paid $149.00 a night on what was supposed to be a hot deal, imagine our surprise when we arrived to reception and it was unattended then we had to phone someone to come we didn't see any other guests the whole stay. We chose this place which is way out of the city because it supposedly had an award winning Resturaunt ( which turned out to be a lamb award which are a dime a dozen in resturants s around NZ) I am a chef and was looking forward to a nice experience. It was a shocking meal in all the courses. The waiter was the bar attendant come room attendant which caused waiting for service.the rooms were very dated although beds very comfortable.

Room Tip: The rooms are all the same. And I wouldn't stay very overpriced

I was pleasantly surprised by Flames International Hotel after reading some ambivalent reviews. Yes the carpet is a bit worn in a few places and it is not a new building however I found it very comfortable. It was a quiet weekend night and the place seemed quite empty. My Premier King (studio) was a really pleasant surprise - spacious, very clean and everything you would expect or need. These rooms look out onto a pool area and you can glimpse the harbour through the palm trees. There is a small private veranda with table and chairs.

The room had two table/desks as well as easy chairs and a coffee table and an overall generous feeling. Similarly the bathroom was excellent - good tiles, shower over bath and nice wide vanity bench. Plenty of hot water. Bed was fine. Like many places you hear corridor noise so it may not be so good if there was a function.

Our meal in the restaurant was also very good but the continental breakfast was average at best. Service was very good both at reception and in the bar/restaurant which it should be since there seemed to be practically no-one else there!
