“A great place to get away from it all”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2014 via mobile

We stayed at LEL for two nights while touring through the Northlands. Upon arrival, we were greeted by David and Polly. They gave us a quick tour and gave us some good advice regarding local activities.

Each morning we were awoken by the birds in the trees and the crowing of the rooster. A pleasant change from the noise of the city.

Our room was spacious and the bed was comfy. We were a bit chilly the second night, but turning on the in room heater solved that dilemma.

There are a number of outdoor activities within a short walk of LEL, including a hike to Whangarei falls and the Abbey Caves.

The kitchen and lounge are located in a separate cottage. While we pretty much had the kitchen to ourselves, there appeared to be plenty of space for a much larger crowd.

Overall, LEL was an excellent spot to base ourselves while visiting the Northlands. We would highly recommend LEL to anyone looking for time away.

After having stayed in over 50 hostels during my last around-the-world trip, I can easily state this is one of the best I've booked.

First, the location. Located on a side road away from the center of Whangarei, you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Yet, the Abbey Caves are right next door and you have groceries, restaurants, and other required amenities less than 5 km away. Then, there's the atmosphere. This is more a farm than a hostel. Fields undulate into the distance. There are gardens visible from all rooms. I stayed in the freestanding studio, with a view of horses grazing in fields from the outside.
And then there are the rooms themselves; the studio (which I highly recommend) is more like a semi-luxury rural retreat than a private double in a hostel. The mattresses are full (not like the pads you find at most hostels), self-regulated mobile heaters, wifi, and tourist tips all at your fingertips. The bathrooms are shared but private (unlike the locker room style bathrooms at most hostels). And the kitchen is fully stocked. Grab some groceries at the local Coles and you can whip up a fine dinner, bring it outdoors, and enjoy the sun setting in the distance.

To echo some of the other reviews here: this is a wonderful, peaceful, and highly recommended place.

Lovely place in the middle of nowhere, just a few minutes walk from the abbey caves and its glowworms. Rooms are clean, spacious and of very high quality, not the usual cheap and uncomfortable beds and furniture. Owners were lovely and gave heaps of tips and recommendations. The caves are worth a visit, especially if you are put off by the high entrance fees they charge for waitmo caves. There isn't one thing we disliked about the place, but it's probably not too easy to get there by public transport.

We had a very lovely, although just too short stay in this nicely designed, well maintained, clean and friendly hostel set in a quiet and relaxing area.
Wish we could stay there longer.
Would recommend to anyone.

Planned to spend 1 night then eventually stayed 4 nights... The place is amazing with stunning views around. It is very green and peaceful.
Clean rooms with independent beds, beautiful decoration.
The hosts are always keen to help in any way.
From there you can easily access to 3 caves (Abbey Caves) : you can directly hire a headlight and plastic shoes for 5$ at the BBH. There is also a MTB park very close to the backpacker.
You really need a car to get there from the city, this is the only inconvenient.

Room Tip: There is a little shed apart from the main backpacker lodge which is fantastic

My niece & I stayed for one night only, but immediately felt at home in this very clean, comfortable, and relaxing hostel. I am so accustomed to staying in 'backpacker-style' accommodation but this was just lovely in every respect. Highly recommend this accommodation to anyone who loves to be close to walks and birds but also wants comfortable & clean accommodation. Thank you Polly & David.
