“Great place - and cooperative Kiwi's”

Well, at least the Kiwi's were cooperative when we visited. Right on cue they popped out to have a look round their domain. They had just had two new Kiwi's arrive and the staff were a little concerned about how well they were settling in, but we went into the Kiwi House and out they both came to see us! I just wish people would listen to the rules - they kindly allow photography but do insist on no flash (for fairly obvious reasons, it upsets the Kiwi's) yet folks were in there flashing away and scaring the birds!

The other features on the site proved equally interesting; we visited on a quiet weekday so not everything was open (we were sorry the trains weren't operating, but there you go). A stroll through the clubs and society's who also use the site proved worthwhile, several enthusiasts were more than happy to tell us about their interests and hobbies.

The kiwi house is most interesting and behind it is the bird sanctuary for sick birds and a tui that chatters-well worth visiting both.

We did get to see the kiwis out and about feeding which was the main purpose of the outing. But didn't think much of the rest (museum etc) and trains only run every 3rd sunday or something like that.

We have passed Kiwi North many times since we moved to Whangarei and finally decided to take a look. What a gem this place is! Went n to see the kiwis and although they were in their burrows 'burrow cam' allowed us to spy on them! While we were chatting to the two guys on the front desk one of them told us a kiwi was out of its burrow (he was watching them on his computer) so we shot back in and saw this beautiful bird eating and running around it's enclosure. Absolutely fascinating. We didn't have time to tour the whole park with it's old buildings and displays but we will certainly be going back to do this. Well done to the staff and volunteers who keep the place looking and operating so well!

Could do with more critters but great staff, good for a couple of hours, the park section is great, the homestead being a highpoint
