“Great Base to explore Northland”
Reviewed 31 December 2006

Just got back from a 3 week trip in New Zealand and Lupton Lodge and the Tutukaka coast was one of the highlights of our trip. Hosts Andy and Karen offered us a warm welcome and made us and our two kids feel at home. We stayed in two rooms of the main house that were interconnected by a bathroom. We all slept fantastically in the cozy beds. We especially liked that the kids could visit the cows, pick fruit off the orchard's trees, feed the chickens and look for eggs each morning. Breakfasts were great, and we even enjoyed Andy's asian inspired cooking one evening. Delicious...and he cooked up a separate option that our kids aged 5 and 7 would eat. It rained one afternoon and we spent it perusing the internet and playing monopoly in the detached rec room. The rest of the time we spent exploring the beaches of the region with great advice from Andy. Try Matapouri's beach for a great beach day!

What a find! This is, without a doubt a doubt, THE place to stay in the Whangarei area... so close to 'town' yet so peaceful & relaxing. Lupton Lodge is beautiful, has everything you could want or need & more...
Andy's delicious breakfasts are a must! Wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in the future... excellent value & a real pleasure.

Loved our stay at Lupton Lodge in July 06, and hosts Andy and Karen were great. The setting is beautiful, and the kids had fun seeing the cows and chickens out of our windows, and Andy even took the kids to help to feed the cows.
We stayed in the barn (completely renovated, with well equipped kitchen, dining area, lounge area, and bedroom upstairs) their self-catering option, but were still able to have Andy's great breakfasts and dinner. The dinner in fact was our highlight, as we were able to put the kids to bed in the barn, plug in their baby monitor, then head a few steps over to the main house for a romantic, relaxing candle-lit dinner (our only meal in a 7-week trip that didn't include our little ones!) with outstanding food.
It's a good location between Auckland and the Bay of Islands and Andy and Karen were very helpful and happy to give maps and recommendations for where to go and what to do and see.
Would like to go back in summer and use that pool!

Sadly we only had one night here, but I would come again and told all my NZ friends and family about this wonderful place.
Apparently the house was moved from nearer town to this beautiful setting, but it looks like it's been here for ever.
We loved the attention to detail on part of hosts, Karen and Andy - including the elegant decor, the comfy bed, luxuries in bathrooms, the interesting breakfast menu, and the room of games, books and DVDs, not to mention the wireless internet access.....
We had an OK dinner about 20 minutes drive away, but next time we'll sample Andy's cooking.
Can't think of anything critical to say about this place - it was a rare find on the edge of some lovely coastline and a great place to stop off on the way from Auckland to the Bay of Islands.

Lupton Lodge is exactly what you want a B&B to be - stylish comfortable rooms, friendly but discrete hosts, great location, fabulous food. Absolutely worth staying in for dinner - Andy's cooking has to be the best in a 100km radius so why go out? Good wine list to complement, and then curl up in fluffy white dressing gowns and watch a DVD in your room. Highly recommended.

I'm always hesitant about recommending somewhere because tastes and expections vary so greatly but I do not think anyone can possibly find anything bad to say about Lupton Lodge. We wholeheartedly agree with everything previous reviewers have said. Our room was beautifully decorated, comfortable and quiet. There is plenty of room in the adjacent barn if you want to chill out to music, read or play snooker. The gardens are spacious and there is a small pool (which we didn't have time to use). We were greeted with Earl Grey tea and a beer and after our first breakfast, we couldn't wait to taste Andy's cooking at dinner. We ate at Lupton Lodge both nights and weren't disappointed. This was one of the best bed and breakfasts we've ever come across. Andy and Karen have only been open for a year but they've got it just right. A great mix of chat, pampering and quiet. It's a great base for the North Island, about 2 hours from Auckland and 3/4 to an hour from the Bay of Islands. The Tutukaka coast is only 20 minutes away and it's handy for diving/snorkelling trips to Poor Knights Island. When we go back to NZ, Lupton Lodge will definately be on our list of places to return to. Thank you Andy and Karen for helping make our stay in NZ so special.
