“A lovely room with beautiful views over the sea”
Reviewed 4 April 2010

I chose Flutes from the description and pictures on their website, even though we were only staying one night on our drive north, and it added about another 40 minutes to our drive. It was worth it!!
The location is stunning: in the sunshine, the sea shone and sparkled; the birds sang, the pukeko strutted their stuff, Spike the seagull turned up at breakfast, and we enjoyed the complimetary champagne on the decking, nibbling the biscotti and watching the tide change, and the dusk fall.
And then we could see so many stars, as there is so little light pollution - we could only see lights from two other homes.
The room was large, very cleverly designed to give maximum space and allow the bed to face the sea views.
Kay and Andy shared their obvious enthusiasm for their (relatively) new life in NZ, over breakfast.
They advised us to drive out to Ocean Beach before traveling north and we wished we could have stayed longer as it was so lovely.

This is a wonderful B&B and Andy and Kay go out of their way to make your stay memorable. The view is stunning and the room has its own private verandah overlooking the bay. The bed is huge and very comfortable and the room is tastefully furnished with a walk in wardrobe, a good shower and a fridge. There is a wide choice of a delicious breakfast and as well as enjoying the view at breakfast too, we were entertained each morning with the local Pukeko's and their family, quails and their chicks, two little bunnies and a very spoilt seagull who was named Spike. We stayed for 3 nights but it was not long enough. There is a lot to explore on the peninsula as well as visiting Whangerai. One can explore the far north from this base too and Andy organises tours. Andy and Kay persuaded their favourite restaurant Top Sails to open on St Valentine's Day and not only booked us in but also Andy ran us there and picked us up. It was great.
