The building appears to be an old garage, and it's not had much done to improve that but the food is very good and quite good value for money, wine ordered one by the glass, not available, ordered another, awful, must have been open for a few days.

Vinyl is no more! The same place but now renamed McCool's under new ownership.
They have tried hard to make the place warmer, more friendly and a little less austere - and one wishes them well, but our first visit was nothing short of appalling.
The new furniture and decoration is a big improvement and the bar area works well. Ordinary wine by the glass is $10 ... there is a good selection but no one could tell me the prices before I ordered.
This was dinner, so we asked for a wine list, only to be told that they did not have one. On further enquiry it became apparent that no one know what wine was available without looking at the rack and that the only way to check the price was to type it into the computer! In the end the waitress brought a hand written note with four wines and prices - but no indication of variety. It was a blind auction! We ended up with rather dull Gun Estate Merlot for which we were charged the princely sum of $47!
The food was even worse. A shared starter was charged as two. The mains were unimginative and simply bad. A horribly overcooked and dry saddle of lamb in a vaguely peppery sauce and an undercooked (pink) duck breast with some greens doused in soy sauce - inedible. Both dishes with little garnish and not much else. With entrees at $29 to $32 the place is overpriced. The total bill for two with four glasses of wine to start, the merlot, a shared garlic bread starter and the two entrees was $162.
All very sad and dreadfully amateur. Let;'s hope they get the message, fire the chef (if there is one) and smarten up their act. We will give them another try before an outright condemnation - newcomers deserve two chances - and we need some decent mid-price restaurants in Whangarei
