We were a group of 5 for an informal birthday dinner while visiting Greymouth. On the recommendation of our motel nearby we decided on Buccleughs. The first thing that came to mind was that the menu was what can best be described as sensible. I mean that in the best way. No pretentious stuff but a good range of dishes. While on the west coast we had been hoping for a meal of local crayfish. We were happily surprised when the fish of the day board was changed to crayfish just as we were seated. It was worth it. A man size crayfish tail with mornay sauce, salad, and new potatoes for $35 was a good deal. The only concern was that 3 of the 5 crayfish tails were slightly overcooked for our liking but we enjoyed them anyway and it is a pleasant change to order crayfish and actually have all you can reasonably eat. The aparagus and bacon soup was truly excellent. The desserts also good. Sticky date pudding very good. Raspberry sundae a bit disappinting. The prices were much more appropriate to the meals than we have experienced elsewhere in the area so we can say we felt very satisfied with the meals, both quality and cost. The wine list was also sensible and reasonably priced. Overall our best restaurant experience on the west coast.
