Stayed here 1 night in a single room. It is an old pub although repainted (for the better or worst?) in bright colours and called backpackers. The room was an ordinary pub room with a bed, basin and closet. Fully made beds and a heater in the room and the place was as clean as it can be with old carpets. Shared toilets and showers clean and functional. The kitchen large and well equipped. A free 2nd beer at the pub, free soup at night, free coffee all day and toast for breakfast added good value. Very friendly staff too!

We stayed at Duke Backpackers 3 nights and enjoyed every moment of it, very friendly owners, very clean place, very comfortable beds. Very warm in the room (fully made-up bed with an extra duvet and a heater), the fireplace in the dining room was working all the time. Lovely colours.
Lots of free stuff, soup in the evening, breakfast, dvd's, coffee, tea, dvd's.
Greymouth was the base, one day we drove to Arthur's Pass, one day all the way to Westport via Punakaiki.
Very recommended.

The Duke is an old hotel turned into a backpackers near the centre of the very (VERY) boring city Greymouth. Because the building is so old it's very noisy. We stayed in a double ensuite room with windom to a tiny courtyard. Many more windows of rooms and shared facilities (such as toilets) were adjecent to this courtyard, which enabled us (unfortunatly) to hear every toiletvisit of other guests. It also was and stayed very warm in our room, especially since we didn't feel comfortable leaving our windows open during the daytime when we weren't there (because of the courtyard).

The plus of this backpackers: big kitchen and it's all fairly clean and the helpfull owners.
The chairs in the diningroom/lounge were a true disaster and the windows are blinded which makes it a strange room to be in.

We stayed here for 3 nights and were happy to leave. Next time I'd definatly would not stay in Greymouth (nor in the Duke), but go to stay in Hokitika, which is a much more vibrant and interesting place to stay.
