“Great Hostel”
Reviewed 1 August 2011

We stayed for 1 night and really enjoyed our stay. Rooms are spacious and comfortable and we loved the African themed decor! Kitchen and communal areas were really well equipped - one of the best hostels I've stayed at would definitely recommend

I was very impressed with this backpackers, and would probably rate it in the top 5 of my travels. It was nice to go somewhere that had a bit of character to it (the owners have included lots of items from their travels, predominantly African).

There were plenty of showers and toilets so was never left waiting to use the shared facilities and the kitchen was massive, so cooking was easy. You shouldn't have a problem finding a bit of space to prep food in and there are at least 4 sets of hobs and sinks (as well as a couple of ovens), so no reason why you should have to eat out. Especially as you can use these facilities right up until half 10 (quietens right down after about 7.30).

The lounge area was very large and cosy (woodburner on the go) with plenty of comfy seats to go round. It was also nice to be able to borrow a kayak for free and paddle around a nearby lake at sunset. All in all highly recommended. Only downer was that wi-fi was a tad expensive ($6 for 2 hours), but I think that is fairly common in NZ.

We stayed for 1 night at this place. we've staying and trying to be at double rooms with ensuite, because of privacy, however, this backpacker doesn't have any double with ensuite. That's no problem for us, especially because the toilets are great. It looks like you're in a 4 star hotel, which just make you feel more comfortable. The rooms are very well decorated, and the place is really nice (you can get in the bikes for free and just go until the beach or kayak) is really good, so we recommend it.

Lonely planet lists it as a top pick so we went their after hiking Arthurs pass. My partner loved it, but I though it was a tad run down. Funky large comfy rooms with expressive funky decor (which I didnt like so much but it wasnt horrible). Rooms were very reasonable ($66). The spa was a nice touch the large common area was good too. Free bike rentals, canoe rentals etc (if they are available), which we didnt use (much better other stuff to do in NZ-like see the glaciers or go to the beaches). Kitchen was great- nice and clean- but too small- at dinner time it was packed so we didnt end up cooking and eat out instead which made our visit more expensive than it should have been. Overall comfortable and affordable if your in greymouth, but the kitchen size was disappointing.

I loved the place! We arrived in Greymouth on the Tranzalpine which was delayed and we told a woman in the tourism office where we were staying. She rang them and within 5 minutes a guy called Simon arrived up to collect us. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy, very eager to help us anyway he could and answer any questions we had.
They provide free mountain bikes and kayaks to guests which was handy.
There is also a small gym and a spa area (which we didnt look at). It seemed to me like they tried hard to make the place into a home for whoever is staying there. Little touches like hot water bottles, towels, free tea and coffee etc added to the nice feel about the place. They even had a board hung up downstairs with the names of who is staying in what room which I found a nice touch as well.
I am not sure how long it is open but the whole place looks brand new and the shared bathrooms are nicely decorated and absolutely spotless.
It is situated about 10-15 minute walk from the town. There is actually very little to do in Greymouth anyway so most people probably wouldn't venture into it much anyway.
If I had to find something bad to say about Global VIllage it would be that our double room was a bit small. However I did look into some of the bigger dorm rooms and they were quite big.
Overall an excellent establishment!
