By far, best backpacker's hostel of our stay in New Zealand. It's well decorated in an international, mainly African, theme, bright and cheerful. The rooms and the kitchen are stocked with many conveniences. The common room is comfortable. The host is great. And best of all, free use of kayaks and bikes. There is a bird reserve just a 10 minute kayak away.
It's not a high-energy loud-music atmosphere, and may thus appeal less to the younger adult traveller who is wanting to party in the evenings. But for us (58 and 62) it was great.

Room Tip: I don't know of any problem rooms.

The Global village backpacker made a really impressive impression about the atmosphere and the facilities it offers. The staff is welcoming as its best! We stayed one night in our van first but it was so enjoyable to stay here that we booked for another night in a double room.

Finally, they thought of everything to make your staying so comfortable.

I highly recommend it!

We loved the character of this place. The only thing keeping us from giving top marks is the grouchy staff/owner. It's an excellent facility with a lot of neat decorating, clean kitchen; however, the owner tends to hover and you feel like you're being babysat. He actually yelled at my husband when we came in from using the hot tub; my husband's swim trunks trickled water in the entry; the owner was upset that we hadn't "wiped our feet". It was a very weird interaction that tainted our stay.

Greymouth can be a wild and challenging place and this hostel offers and warm, friendly and comforting place to stay. Because it is so good it is busy but we've stayed here twice now for 2 or 3 nights each time and we've always found it quiet. The kitchen area is very workable and the lounge rooms comfortable and friendly. It is an easy walk to supermarket and a longer but interesting walk to the wild grey rocky beach.

This was the absolute best backpacker place that I've stayed in. We stayed for only one night but we were impressed from the first moment. The place has everything, well equipped kitchen, tv room with extensive video collection, nice lounge, free off street parking, gym, sauna, spa pool. The hostel and shared bathrooms were very clean, there are no ensuites here but for once, we didn't mind a bit. The staff were very friendly too and we really loved the global traveler theme that the place has. The thought they put into running the hostel, the nice little touches (like folding the towels into the shape of a swan), would put even some 5 star hotels to shame.

This is hands down the best backpackers I've ever been to. All in all a great experience - friendly staff, clean and very well kept establishment. Rooms separated from central areas which reduces noise levels. Beautiful gardens, kayaks, bikes etc. Excellent bathrooms and kitchen. We had a great stay, will stay there again.
