“Not as advertised”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 November 2011

Whilst the propertiers are lovely people, this accomodation was not as advertised. Firstly, this is actually a pub motel which I was most suprised to find when I arrived and secondly, the room did not have 'modern decor' but was very old and outdated.

chose this motel in Greyhound because of tripadvisor. Don't stay here if you travel with children. the 2 bedroom unit is very small and aged. Bathroom was terribly small and cold. No heater or heated towel rail. Our whole family shivered after taking shower. Heater only available at living hall. Rooms with heated blanket. We are provided with many soap bars but only 2 packets of shampoo. Towels was colored and do not have feeling of cleanliness. Sink with separate cold and hot tap, cannot mix into warm. If you intend to cook, better
clean up the utensils before use. The moment you get the key to the room, you will find the door is in bad shape. The guest laundry room? You will not want to use it. price is not cheap for such low quality accomodation. BAR may be good if you like to drink. Free wifi as advertised in website actually only free 1 hour use.

Fantastic night's sleep, fantastic food in the restaurant (that steak!!), good beer and wonderful company in the bar. Very glad to have spent a night in Paroa, and thank you to Bernie and co for our welcome and comfortable stay.
Welcoming locals and very easy to believe in an isolation that isn't quite real.
Thanks again for a night that made our trip all the more memorable.

The Paroa hotel is one of the best places I've stayed in New Zealand. It is clean, quiet and the service is lovely. The family who run this business are so helpful and went an extra mile to make our visit comfortable and worthwhile.

Some of the rooms at the back are close to the shoreline and there is a deck outside where you can enjoy the fresh air and the sounds of the ocean. We stayed in a double studio unit and the room was spacious, clean and quiet at night.

The only thing I would recommend is to ask to be picked up from the train station if you are coming via the TranzAlpine. This is because it is not within walking distance and a cab costs about $25. So please request to be picked up before you arrive.

Overall I would recommend this hotel as a great place to stay.

We stumbled across this place after visiting Shantytown and talking to some locals there. When asked about a good place to stay where we could also get a good meal and drinks we were immediately pointed to the Paroa Hotel. It was just back on the highway from this attraction.

The owner greeted us warmly and was happy to offer the four adults traveling together a great 2 bedroom unit with interconnecting bathroom (only flaw really...sharing a bathroom, but that's just our issue. Unreasonable to expect many places to have two bathrooms). Laundry facilities were made available to us and we headed to the bar/dining room for drinks and dinner. What we found was a place popular with local families (always a good sign) and friendly people to talk and laugh with. Our Roast of the Day @ about $16.50 was the BEST roast dinner with succulent local lamb with gravy and plenty of gorgeous veges - too many to mention here. It was a great value meal and the whole stay was excellent and good value for money.

Room Tip: Just ask!

Just South of Greymouth this is a real family-run place. Much more than a motel, though the rooms are motel-style with kitchens, it is the local bar, rugby (the local religion) themed and family restaurant. Food is excellent, with fast service at fine value with everything freshly cooked. Right by the sea, you wake to the roar of the surf, and in the evenings enjoy a sensational sunset as four of the eleven rooms face north-west.

The family runs it all and are present at every hour, which ensures value and quality. Well done!
