“Resful Overnight Stop”

We overnighted here on our way south and picked Oak Lodge due to its good reviews. We weren't dissapointed. Hosts Alastair and Shirley were extremely welcoming and offered us a room upgrade on arrival at no extra cost not to mention a cuppa and cake. The guest lounge has a beautiful view facing west and on the night we were there we were treated to a lovely sunset.
A great breakfast finished our stay set us up for our next day's travel.

We chose to stay in Greymouth as it provided the best stopping point between Nelson and Queenstown on the west coast. Alistair and Shirley were friendly and helpful with suggestions of spots to visit and restaurants. We spent two nights in the main house in two of the larger rooms which were quite pleasant. Both had en suite bathrooms. There is also a guest sitting room upstairs with a sink, small refrigerator, balcony with a view to the garden and a large TV where we watched the Olympics. Shirley's breakfasts were wonderful and Alistair was not only very kind but a fount of information about the area.

Room Tip: We had the balcony room which was the most expensive room and probably the best guest room in the ho...

Spent one night here in the self contained cottage and it was wonderful. Alastair and Shirley are great hosts and went out of their way to help us with information. The cottage was great, complete with a washing machine--what we needed at this point in our travels. The shower was worth the cost of the room. An absolute gem of a B&B. just north of Greymouth on rte 6. If you are in the area, it is the place to stay.

The owners are extremely welcoming and very happy to have a yarn, especially about sheep!

Rooms are comfortable, but positioning of some beds is a bit hard for adults, as the sloping roof makes reading in bed nearly impossible.

Great breakfast.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back as it is quite close to a major road

Oak Lodge is a great home stay, beautiful property about 100 acres, tennis court, feed their sheep, very comfortable rooms, plus the extra lounge and kitchen upstairs for everyone to use, great food with extra homemade cakes by Shirley and Alistair's knowledge of where to go in the South Island was a wonderful help to us. Go check out Greymouth.

After a day of walking to the Franz Josef Glacier in a constant downpour, we arrived at our one and only home stay. We (my grand daughter and I) were greeted by the most welcoming of hosts, Sherley and Alaster.
Hot tea and homemade cakes, served in front of a fire made us feel warm from from the inside out.
Our room was darling, clean and so very comfortable. We had a soak in the nice hot tub, and then the rain ended and I went for a walk with the sheep, the gardens are so very lovely. In the morning we had an unbelievable breakfast, all homemade and the table conversation made it perfect. We were off but not without knowing we had really hit the jackpot with our find on the internet for a home stay. I wished we could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: Just ask for the one to fit you needs

Reviewed 25 April 2013

As a regular visitor to the West Coast I have stayed in and reviewed a fair share of quite nice places. However Oak Lodge is my favourite by quite a margin. Unfortunately our visit coincided with the heaviest rainfall for quite sometime. However, while we were unable to enjoy the garden the mist and rain off the hillside showed why so many artists try to capture this West Coast view.

The rooms were big, clean and comfortable. The whole place has quite a stately feel to it. The propieters pay a lot of attention to detail.

I absolutely recomend this place.
