“"Wonderful Stay!!"”
Reviewed 17 January 2014

On our journey to west coast, we found that this is the best spot. We stayed only for only one day on Dec 27, 2013 on our motorhome. The kitchen, shower and toilet was very clean and well equip, with spas as well. At night we walked through Dell glow worm, it was literally across the road. In the morning the kids swam at the beach. They also have several Llama, they are interesting and kids loved to watch them.
And on our way to fox glacier, we realized that we left our shoes at Shining Star. Tracey emailed us. She was very helpful and arrange the courier to send our shoes to Christchurch to the motorhome rental office. This is the best part of our journey to NZ, when we feel secure and helped by the Kiwis. Thank you very much Tracey.
If we have opportunity to go to NZ again, we would definitely be staying at Shining Star.

We found this ground incredibily friendly and accommodating, even though they are not primarily geared towards accommodating tents.

My husband and I stayed here in our tent for four nights between Christmas and New Year. We came at the last minute, due to the West Coast looking like the only place in the south island where the sun would be shining during this period. We phoned the night before to enquire about unpowered campsites, as they didn't really advertise these very well on their website. They said they had availability for the four nights we wanted, and that they could accommodate our larger tent (a two section style tent, Basecamp 180).

When we arrived, they said that we could have the first tent site and that our car could take the park next to it, and that if need be we could spread out to the site next to us. We were extremely impressed with this generosity, especially when we saw that the camp only has four tent sites altogether, and that the park that our car was given was alongside all of the unpowered campervans. As it turned out, the site we were allocated was the largest of the four, so we did not need to take up any of the site next door, so they were able to fully rent those sites over the next four nights.

We found this level of customer service towards tent campers to be excellent, especially given that the business is clearly not primarily geared towards people with tents. Presumably the carpark that we had occupied could have been rented to a campervan during the four nights we stayed as the tent and unpowered campervan sites were mostly full during our four days. So we very much appreciate how they accommodated us.

I have seen others commenting about the lack of showers and toilets, and I wondered when I saw how few there were if this would be a problem, but I never once had to queue for a toilet or shower, so I can't see any problem with the number provided. It seemed to be a busy time when we were there, especially with the weather being favourable over that side of the island, but even so, no queues for any of the facilities, including in the kitchen.

I would definitely stay here again. The location was great with the beach at your doorstep, great service and lovely setting.

Room Tip: If you are camping, let them know the size of your tent when you make your reservation, and they are...

Stayed in a cabin meters from the beach there is a deck off the lounge where you can sit to enjoy the views. The kitchen had everything you need toaster, cutlery etc. The room had a single bed and a double bed, and a pull down double bed in the lounge. It was very clean and well maintained. There are many different types of accommodation depending on your needs. The grounds are tidy with an assortment of animals that kids would enjoy as well as a trampoline and a small play ground. Staff are helpful and friendly. It is only a short drive to hokitika township. We really enjoyed our stay and will return.

We stayed in a cabin back from the beach front for 2 nights and the experience was excellent.
The location is as described - right on the beach. The facilities are modern and well taken care of, and the service we received was very good. If traveling with children I imagine the small assortment of animals (llama, goat, pig etc) housed in an enclosure in the centre of the complex could be a great source of entertainment.
A very good experience.

Our private chalet with ocean view was fantastic. We wanted to move in permanently! The wooden chalet itself was gorgeous and romantic with all the amenities. The bed was extremely comfortable and the sheets were extra soft. We had everything we needed for the perfect stay-- even in the rain. The woman who checked us in and out of the property was extremely kind and helpful with suggestions. The property sits across the street (literally) from the glow worm dell. That dell is worth the 5min look/see. Very cool. And...we highly recommend getting the whitebait pizza from Fat Pipi in town. We're from Chicago (known for the best pizza in the world) and this pizza blew our minds. Lastly, the supermarket in town was amazing. Honestly, the best selection of any supermarket we shopped at in the whole country. Thumbs up for Hokitika! We will definitely stay at the Shining Star again if we're ever back in the area.

Room Tip: The view from Chalet #5 was excellent!

We stayed in a self-catering cabin back from the sea this visit - clean, well-appointed and great value for money. We have previously stayed in the beachfront chalets, which are a unique and wonderful experience, looking out to sea. The beach is wild and dramatic, typical of the West Coast. The Shining Star has a number of fascinating animals, including lamas. a short drive into Hokitika, with great greenstone displays and bargains. And just down the hill from the old Seacliff Asylum, and later hospital, with great views and a display board with the history.
