Owner description: Welcome to The National Kiwi Centre The National Kiwi Centre is situated in the heart of Hokitika in an undercover facility that provides viewing of kiwi in our nocturnal house that replicates their natural environment. During your visit you can take part in feeding the giant eels (10am, 12 noon and 3pm daily). The eels are approximately 85 to 100 years old. After the Eel feedings you can see the Kiwi being feed. view the tuatara, New Zealands oldest living dinosaur. Try your hand at catch and release crawly fishing fun for all ages . We have lots of other fish and creatures to look at. And it's all inside so no getting wet on that rainy day

Really wanted to see a kiwi and there are two.One seemed ok but one was always running up and down the same path(which speaks for a mental disturbance). You are asked to be silent of course but all the noise from the entrance room can be heard in the Kiwi room...the other animals(like fish)have to deal with artificial plants in their tank or huge scratches in the plexiglass. This was a sad place to see animals at and the owners should refurbish the whole place because like this $18,50 is a rip off and it made me feel really bad for the animals. The lady at the entrance was really nice though

It was alright, however the price was too high for what you get to see. The kiwi was very cute though. Only saw one of them.

Looks run down but the kiwi house looks very natural. Eels are not to be missed. I hope these place can stick around.

Came across this place by chance. It is tucked away down a side street in a small building. Not a lot to see but the tanks are clean and there is a lot of information. Get there at feeding time and saw the eels. They are so gentle and it was a wonderful experience as we were the only visitors early morning and we were invited to feed them. Alright there was only one kiwi out, but they are nocturnal, and very timid. It is not like viewing chickens!

This place was great. Im not really into fish etc but the displays were clean and the information interesting. Highlights were learning about and seeing the giant eels. I even fed one (quite brave) and have a new appreciation of them (not sure I would want one for a pet though). The kiwi room was one of the best Ive seen and an amazing experience to see our national emblem so close, at one stage there was just a thin pane of glass and me between this amazing wee bird. I had a great time
