“lovely visit”

Cushchine Animal FarmYard Park
Reviewed 28 June 2014

Whilst passing through kaikoura i spent an afternoon at the farm park and had a great time at the hand feeding loads of animals such as llamas, goats, donkeys and ponies.

What's really special is that you get to have a hands-on experience with the animals and go into their pens to pet and feed them which is quite unique!

If you've got time whilst in Kaikoura then I'd recommend going to the farm park, for only $10 per adult it's a budget friendly activity that suits everyone.

We were excited about the visit to the park and been telling the kids on the drive to Kaikoura about what we were doing they were also excited.
On arrival things were poorly organized with wet muddy gum boots supplied and this was not till I put my foot in them and discovered it...
As we walked in the gate it was clearly feeding time for the animals so my toddler got bowled straight away and the animals managed to get her cup of animal food, no offer to replace this was made.
We continued in the gate where we went over to pet the ponies, animals were clearly hungry and our 5 year old soon wore the brunt of that being pecked by turkeys and then also balling and we then had to carry him for the rest of the way, this was difficult with mud everywhere and no path ways, things went from bad to worse the animals were sooo hungry and chasing us both children crying and not wanting to walk the guide suggested we go see the sheep and again this ended in disaster with one bunting my 2 year old and sending her flying, this was the last straw for us we then departed we were very lucky she was not more seriously injured!
total waste of money $30....for nothing, and owner seemed to be in a daze and hopeless while the backpacker staff tried to help us but we were over it at this stage.
The owner then offered our upset children a ride on the the bucking bronco, have to say this was the last thing they wanted to do....I would not recommend going here and would certainly make sure the animals are fed if you do....disaster poorly organized and run...not Recommended... luckily the next day in our travels we discovered a lovely farm park in Hanmer which improved the children's anxiety after Kaikoura!!!

This is our 2nd time here. The animals are so happy and well cared for with plenty of space to be free and natural. the staff were lovely and spent time with us telling us little stories about the animals. There were 3 sets of week old piglets, adorable. And you can stay here ( we will next time ) there is a tipi, a stunning replica Wild West wagon, yurt, house truck and cottage to chose from !

We stayed there for 2 nights and loved it. Our 4 years old son loved to find and play with all the toys in the cottage. all the kids loved feeding the animals. The beds are very comfortable. We woke up every morning to birds singing around us. We enjoyed our stay there.

The place is run down. There is no warm greetings from the owners and we were not being walked through thoroughly or had any guidance from anyone. The farm owners basically just release the animals and do not really explain anything. Although there were laminated information around introducing the different animals, we would actually prefer some interactions from someone. However, what we saw was the owner enjoying hot drink and ignoring us. We don't feel welcome at all and there was no hospitality at all. We didn't chase any animals but the lady there scolded us for chasing the ducks just because we walked fast behind the ducks. We also did not see that many animals as what they had advertised. We also didn't really get to touch any animals because the animals shun us as we are strangers. We were not impressed at all. Comparing with other farms we went, this farm's hospitality was the worst because we were the only visitors there that morning and they do not even bother to have some interactions with us! We wasted NZ$30.
The other farms we went even shared information with us on how old their animals were, how they reproduce and the owners gave very warm hospitality.
