“Great Atmosphere”
Reviewed 14 August 2013

I've stayed here three times and the atmosphere is excellent. Joe does an amazing job. This backpackers has a great location, just a short walk from the town centre. I met loads of people from all over the world. The kitchen is great and the rooms are comfortable. It's very affordable and I loved the music and comedy. Go stay there!

Room Tip: Book in advance.

One of our last stops on a 6 week tour of NZ couldn't have been finished better with 3 nights here.

The rooms are clean, modern and there is a lovely feel to the hostel.

This is how a hostel should be run rather than trying to make money at every turn. Free bikes, baking ingredients, board games etc etc etc

The two owners are very friendly and helpful and will do their upmost to make your stay.

Would definitely return! Prices are extremely cheap for the quality you get.

Stay here you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: If your lucky enough to be there for the renowned BBQ, then you are in luck.

We stayed here in August 2012. I was on my honeymoon and we stayed here for 2 nights whilst touring around New Zealand. Whilst we were here we managed to do some great sea kayaking, walking and whale watching and also eat some good seafood! However, this hostel was also amazing and added to the experience. Everyone was so friendly, great wood burners to keep things warm in the evenings, guitars and pianos to play, cakes being baked every night. We really had such a great time here and such good staff that I would wholeheartedly recommend this hostel and intend to return in the future!

This is a great spot for younger travellers, with a large communal area with games, guitars etc. We stayed in a double room but it was very small and not too comfortable. Kaikora is small, and the main street is close by, as is the whale watching centre.

You could feel that the owners love what they do. The lounge is cosy and invites to laze around. This place has a good vibe. I stayed in a twin room in a side building but was happy to be away from the buzz at night.

All in all the place was unfortunately not my cup of tea though younger backpackers seem to like it. The kitchen area was way too crowded and couldn't cope with the number of people cooking at night, hence it was not the cleanest. Nobody could make out spare towels. Bathrooms, at least in the separate building, were old and one shower broken (not hanging), and last but not least I stayed in a mouldy-smelling room. Nevertheless, try this place if you are young, it's 'different'.

A really lovely small personal hostel that has a great homely feel.

The common area is great with guitars, piano, ukelele(sp?!) comfy corner, art area etc. we arrived to a group meal being cooked where you pay what you think as well as cake another day.

We had a double room which was small but big enough.

About a 10minute walk along the front to where the cages etc are, right by the dolphin encounter office.

I'd definitely recommend to stay here!!

The Albatross Backpacker Inn in Kaikoura is a nice backpacker inn. You feel that the owners are really passionate about what they do. They organise BBQ, planted fresh herbs for the guests to use free of charge and there is a nice vibe about this place.

However, there are numerous practical issues.

There are not enough showers, we woke up earlier to make sure that we could shower at be on time for our whale watching tour. The outside doors close automatically with a very lound bang. We were woken up numerous times during the night.

All of this is unfortunate but we still had an enjoyable time there.
