“Would stay there again”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

The Albatross is a funky, unpretentious place, with lots of virtues. The local people all told us it was the best backpackers in Kaikoura, and we believed them. It was clean and friendly (staff and fellow visitors), well located and safe. Our twin room in a separate building was so small one of us had to lie down on a bed so the other could pack on the other bed, but the beds were comfortable. Having games and music, and the open, connected kitchen made for much better ambiance than fancy furniture or a TV would have done. People got together in the evening in the lounge, creating a very pleasant social atmosphere. It was a good walk from the station, but I don't think you can do better in this class in Kaikoura. People of any age would feel welcome here.

The backpackers feels more like a home than a hostel, the communal areas are cosy and very clean. We stayed in a double which was a bit on the small side but perfectly adequate. Great location, easy to walk everywhere.

The room wasn't anything to write home about but I had the best time at this hostel, the vibe was just amazing. There are free games, musical instruments, puzzles, a reading nook. The people I met were brilliant. I'd love to come back.

The Albatross was my home for about a month during my New Zealand travels, and a place where I met some of the greatest friends of my trip. The atmosphere of the hostel is like no other, extremely cozy & clean... a corner full of instruments & books.. baking box in the kitchen.. and right down the road from the ocean. I highly recommend this lovely place. Also, to any backpackers.. they do accept wwoofers! :)

I've stayed here three times and the atmosphere is excellent. Joe does an amazing job. This backpackers has a great location, just a short walk from the town centre. I met loads of people from all over the world. The kitchen is great and the rooms are comfortable. It's very affordable and I loved the music and comedy. Go stay there!

Room Tip: Book in advance.

One of our last stops on a 6 week tour of NZ couldn't have been finished better with 3 nights here.

The rooms are clean, modern and there is a lovely feel to the hostel.

This is how a hostel should be run rather than trying to make money at every turn. Free bikes, baking ingredients, board games etc etc etc

The two owners are very friendly and helpful and will do their upmost to make your stay.

Would definitely return! Prices are extremely cheap for the quality you get.

Stay here you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: If your lucky enough to be there for the renowned BBQ, then you are in luck.

We stayed here in August 2012. I was on my honeymoon and we stayed here for 2 nights whilst touring around New Zealand. Whilst we were here we managed to do some great sea kayaking, walking and whale watching and also eat some good seafood! However, this hostel was also amazing and added to the experience. Everyone was so friendly, great wood burners to keep things warm in the evenings, guitars and pianos to play, cakes being baked every night. We really had such a great time here and such good staff that I would wholeheartedly recommend this hostel and intend to return in the future!
