I think this is a place for tourists and first time visitors to New Zealand with lots of money to spend. Wanting a stop off en route back home from Nelson ( and having left it too late!) it was Hobson's Choice. Yes, it is very nicely decorated and very nicely situated in our beautiful country. Our host was charming - but for a family - 2 adults and 3 children for one night at nearly $1000 we felt it was considerably overpriced I am afraid and not many kiwis would part with this kind of money in exchange for what we got. Rooms were too hot and the pillows really uncomfortable. Not thinking to give guests milk for tea at these prices ?! We are seasoned travellers and have stayed throughout New Zealand and the rest of Europe and the UK ( most recently London) at some fabulous accommodation and would not rate this as value for money at all - sorry :(

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for a night and had a wonderful experience both in the hotel - great welcome and service from Robyn - and Kaikoura itself
We had wanted to have our daughter stay with us but the hotel was full and it was suggested that we use the Studios on Brighton which was great as well and really helpful
Although we had an initial difficulty with the wifi that was soon sorted
The room was marvellous - East facing so we woke up to the greatest sunrise - and very well decorated in contemporary style
Couldn't have been more pleased with our choice

We stayed for a night here in one of the courtyard rooms, the room and bathroom was beautiful. Only down size being the electric shower being of a low pressure and volume. However I wouldn't let this detract from a lovely stay, the owner was a nice lady, and was very helpful. We were unfortunate not to be able to have dinner in the restaurant due to a Xmas party but had a great meal at the nearby green dolphin!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the sea view if it is in your budget

Lovely people and restaurant but the room was tiny with no cupboard to hang anything up in. A good overnighter but if staying longer avoid. Only room for one person out of bed at a time. Very intimate ensuite. Probably better to stay in one of the motels up the street and book into the restaurant which was terriffic.

Room Tip: Avoid number 7 as the outside table and chairs look on to a bamboo screen.

A friend and I have just finished a perfect stay at the Kaikoura Boutique Hotel. We opted for the 'historic waterfront room', which was absolutely delightful and definitely worth the money. The hotel is an extremely tasteful mix of an 1886 building given a contemporary twist. Robyn, the owner, could not have been more helpful, including allowing us an early check-in. The hotel has a separate restaurant, Maxtons, on the ground floor, which has exquisite food. It's also an easy walk from pretty much everywhere you'll want to be - 15 minutes from the train station and shops and 15 minutes from the Green Dolphin restaurant at the other side of the bay. I could not recommend it more.

I stayed at the Kaikoura Boutique Hotel and it was first class. I arrived late in driving rain but the warm welcome I received from Paul was cheering. The room was lovely and had everything you could need. The setting is just glorious and, while it was sunny in town the view of the snow covered mountains were spectacular. I had dinner in the restaurant attached, which was also first class with helpful staff and beautifully cooked and presented food.
The whole weekend was a triumph....the whale watching was a bit spectacular too.
