After waiting over an hour for our bread to arrive we asked a waitress about the delay. She immediately said 'it is coming now' without even checking!? After another 10 minutes we asked a different waitress and she actually checked with kitchen and brought out bread straight away. We waited another 40 minutes for mains. My husband couldn't even cut his lamb it was so tough. The people sitting next to us had also been waiting hours. They at least had the grace to take the lamb off the bill. Lovely views but terrible food and poor service. Go for a drink but eat somewhere else.

Paid $90 for double room with basin through I-site while on cycling trip. Shared shower and toilet. Old western pub some 10-20 mins walk from central Kaikoura.

Accommodation was perfect for me. Professional service and room with shared facilities included all I needed. Restaurant and bar downstairs was a bonus.

Sea views are lovely.

Would definitely stay again.

stayed for 2 nights (Friday and Saturday night) place was deserted ordered a jug, sat down looked at the Kiwiana on the walls, however the Argentine bar Manager played a 'jazz CD' that really didn't fit in to the kiwi feel of the pub, it was loud and repetitive, at 4.30pm there was a stampede of the 'social club' into the bar for their '6 o'clock swill' chattering of people clinking of glasses, colourful language (which made the kiwiness of the bar) the raffles, the bar was alive as though the bar was of yesteryear when I remembered watching my dad drink there during the summer holidays when I was a nipper being handed a bag of chips and a raspberry drink, anyway come 6.30pm the social club vanishes, I am left alone in the bar, I went up stairs after having another jug or two and having some much needed intelligent conversation from the German barman, tried to engage the Argentine manager in conversation however was given a look of distain and ice cold, she made the German like Billy Connelly
The room was clean, bed was fantastic, very rustic and a great view from the balcony, breakfast was good, and shower was even better, parking for the vehicle could be better in a compound would be great.
I have to say this bar needs a band on a Friday or weekend night to pull the punters and give the house guests something to look forward too, I didn't use the restaurant one look at the menu it was overpriced and lacked value.
