Ohau Point Seal Colony
Ranked #2 of 38 things to do in Kaikoura
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 14 December 2012

We visited in early December and the colony was very active. The bulls were butting for dominance and some of the females had the tiniest pups. Most of the time when you see a seal colony, the seals are just laying around, but not here! Well worth the pullout from the highway.

Just so wonderful to see large numbers of seals chilling out on and around the rocks along the shore line. Just so great to see and listen to their grumbles!

Easy to access. Relatively easy to walk around at low tide. Extremely good chance of seeing seals up close. We went to a colony on the west coast and couldn't get anywhere near as close as the Kaikoura colony.
