Stayed just one night in the four bed female dorm, beds really comfy, nice pillows etc. Dorm is clean and well presented, there were only two of us in it so perfect, it would be a little cramped for four. Staff very friendly and helpful. Nice big TV lounge and decent kitchen. Only downside was that you had to pay for wifi.

Spent seven weeks travelling around New Zealand, and this was the best hostel I stayed in. The manager, Craig, couldn't do enough to make us feel at home, the room was newly decorated with enough room for all four of us, and the lounge was cosy and inviting. Large, fully-equipped kitchen, excellent location. Will definitely use again when I return to actually try and see some whales in better weather...

They have the best location from all the places in kaikoura. From their terrace you look at the sea, place is in town. Big lounge room with comfy couches, big tv with DVD player. Big kitchen. Nice rooms. All was perfect. Paid 65$ for double with shared bathroom.

The Fishtank is a nice hostel in the centre of town. Kaikoura is a small town, so not noisy at all, even in the centre of the city where this hostel is located. It is a short walk to the tour operators for whale watching, dolphin encounters and loads of other cool stuff. Craig, the host, is a really nice, helpful guy and he keeps the hostel clean and tidy. Go ask him what to do in town, he usually knows what the best thing to do is in the time that you're there. He recommended us to do the dolphin encounter rather then the whale watching, simply because there have been heaps of dolphins around (we saw around 300 on our trip!!!!) in the time that we were there and not so many whales.
In the communal room you can watch movies or sit outside on the massive balcony with an awesome view of the ocean and the mountains.
We stayed here for three nights and we loved it!

This Backpack is one of the best I stay in NZ yet ! Lots of nice paintings on the walls, clean and comfy common area, 50m from the beach and straight in front of the bus stop !
The new manager is very helpfull and give good advice on what to do in the area.
I'll defenitly come back to the Fish Tank if I go back to Kaikoura ( which is an amazing city as well :)

We took off to Kaikoura and were wondering where to stay, so tried the Fish Tank Lodge first and were impressed about the service and liked the quirky place with all those amazing paintings!
Our room downstairs " with mountain view " ;))) ( bit ironically expressed) was a bit smelling like mushrooms :( , but the mattresses were really good, especially for my sore back!
We enjoyed our breakfast on the balcony with " real" sea view, which we prepared in the tidy and organized kitchen!
The shower and toilets were tidy.
Thanks for having us! ;)

If you are young and love to party till "all hours," this may be the place for you, but if you would appreciate a quiet, clean place to sleep, look elsewhere. The bedroom (we had a double) was ok, but had windows that opened out to the deck, upon which sat two or three people who talked loudly and long into the night. The bathrooms were not only dirty, but had no toilet paper nor paper towels (most bathrooms in NZ have driers), and they smelled pretty badly too. If there had been someone present to enforce any "Quiet Hours," that might have helped, but they were not present. Bottom line, look elsewhere.........

Room Tip: Not sure if a room in the back would have helped. We had a room that looked out onto the deck. Nor...
