“Not too impressed ”
Reviewed 12 July 2014 via mobile

Although the place received rave reviews from the locals, it didn't impress me much apart from its low and reasonable prices. Given the amount of food served, it was pretty good value for money but didn't taste as good as many claim. Still quite worth a visit though.

“Underwhelming ”
Reviewed 4 July 2014 via mobile

I was expecting really good tasty seafood especially the crayfish when we saw the good reviews from TripAdvisor. The crayfish was a little too. The seafood platter was also underwhelming and taste was not savoury enough.

I'm not sure why there were rave reviews for this place. Me and all my friends kept our hopes up but was disappointed the below average service and food.

“Blue Cod at 'The Original'”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

Personally, I enjoy eating at unique, original, and esoteric venues, and in my opinion 'The Original' qualifies on all counts. I had blue cod there, and the price was quite modest, the fish tasty, and the atmosphere fresh and salty:-)!

“Trip of a Lifetime”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

By the side of the main coast rd,to the south of Kaikoura, there is the world famous Original Kaikoura Seafood BBQ Kiosk. There are about four people serving and the fish is cooked to a high standard.Tables and chairs are set out along the grass verge and there is waiter service, but you have to clear the table yourselves. This keeps the cost down.So you have a lovely cooked meal in the open air,on a grass verge,at a good price.NOT TO BE MISSED.

“Seaside Picnic”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

This is a lovely way to have a picnic lunch by the sea on a lovely Kaikoura day without all the hassle of actually taking all the picnic stuff with you. They have a variety of seafood meals for sale, very simple and reasonably priced. Also you can buy coffee, tea and cold drinks there.
You are able to sit out outside at picnic tables, under umbrellas to have your meal; or buy your meal to take away or to go to the beach and sit on the sand to eat. It is peaceful, just off the roadside and just a short walk from there to the seal colony.
