Amazing, about 100 seal pups in the waterfall and another 30 in the stream and bush as you walk to the waterfall. Looks like the seal pups are only there between winter months April - September. The waterfall is 27km north of Kaikoura, you will see parking areas on both sides of State Highway 1, right next to the sea. Not to be missed!

Lots a baby seals in winter time around the waterfall which you can't find it any place else!! Make sure dress up well to keep warm. It's pretty cold near the waterfall.

Must go!

Believe the hype. This place is magical. Where else can you see a pool full of frolicking seal pups? Do not miss this if you are on the road to kaikoura or picton.

By far the most amazing hour and a half of a 3 week visit to the south and north islands!!! That you can engage with nature in this way without facilities, controls, fences, etc and have over 50 baby seals accept you for what you are: just another piece of gawking wildlife, makes this extra special.

To some extent I am loathe to make this review, thus further advertising this extraordinary and probably unique event, with the possibility that, some day, this magical place will be loved to death. DOC must really manage this site very carefully so that others in the future can see it as we did - with nothing between you and the baby seals except fresh air and your sense of doing what's right.

Breathtaking!

Nothing could have prepared me for this very special experience. I had read about it on trip advisor, but it was one of the most amazing things in my life. There were seal pups frolicking in the stream on the way, but literally hundreds at the waterfall. I sat on a rock watching and three pups came out of the water and up to me, one actually sniffed and touched my leg. I was a little nervous as they are wild animals, and resisted the urge to touch it, and it really seemed like it wanted to play. It was such a special moment, I will never forget it! We did struggle to find it and I am glad the nice man at a Nims seafood place gave us directions as we had initially missed it (great chips by the way). Take the time to do this, even if you are just travelling through. It is an absolute must!
