“Best Pizza in 14 visits to New Zealand”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2014

We live in France and spend quite a lot of time in Italy - wonderful thin pizzas available in both places, normally cooked in wood-fired ovens.

We are just coming to the end of our 14th and, sadly, last visit to New Zealand. All but one of those visits have lasted for 3 months. Clearly we love NZ but, as people who like to get a decent pizza once a week or so, we have been gravely disappointed in that regard. It is very difficult to find a decent pizza in this country. The bases are usually pastry, are very poor, and are sometimes inedible.

So what a delight to find Passione, in Kaikoura. The pizzas were not only the best we have ever had, by a huge margin, in New Zealand - they were the best pizzas we have had anywhere - France and Italy included, for several years.

Passione is THE place to go for a pizza in New Zealand. All the other food we could see also looked excellent. The service was friendly and efficient.

We can't recommend it enough.

“Best pizza”

Cracking pizza here and large enough for the two of us to share and have a pudding too. The wine by the glass, Pinot Gris, was excellent.

The food was wonderful! Cannot say any more except that we would definitely return to Passione again if we are ever in Kaikoura.

“Excellent from beginning to end”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2014

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Passione last night and for those that like Italian food, it’s a must.

We were attracted initially by the clear cut décor of the restaurant and the abstract works of art on the wall. The menu posted outside also looked enticing.
We were pleased that we had booked a table as the restaurant was very busy. Despite this, the service was very good. The young ladies waiting at table were very friendly and charming.

We started with an entrée between the two of us, as we had seen from the plates coming out of the kitchen that the portions seemed very copious. The bruschetta were delicious. Simple fare, but tasting divine! We followed this by grilled chicken, flavoured with lemon and thyme, on a bed of salad of Mediterranean vegetables. Every mouthful was a delight. The flavours were superb! My husband had to finish the meal with the tiramisu, as it’s one of his favourite desserts. Yummy!! Each of the plates were attractively decorated with garden flowers- nasturtiums and marigolds.

We thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We had a brief opportunity to speak to the owner, who it would seem was also the artist that painted the works of art I liked on the walls. With a couple of drinks and a bottle of wine, the bill came to 140 NZD.
