“Never Ever Again!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2013

Firstly, the only reason we stayed at Donegal House was due to being in an organised group. On arrival we left our bus to be greeted by all the rubbish and junk piled along the front of the building. Not a good look. We were allocated Room 14. It is the smallest room they have and being right beside the kitchen preparation area is the noisiest! We were told there were no more rooms left so had to accept it. We went into the restaurant/bar for a drink and meal and when ordering were told there would be an hour wait as they were busy. When the meal finally arrived it did not have the roast potatoes listed, just some overcooked lukewarm chips. I was told they could redo the meal but decided not to wait any more and ate a very below average meal. My wife and friends all had to ask for deserts which were supposed to come after their meals. When we returned to the room for the night I removed the bedspread and pillows to reveal a disgusting mixture of dust, dirt and dead insects. I called the manager who agreed that it was unacceptable and offered us another room which came as a surprise as we were told earlier there were no rooms left! The room had apparently been vacated that morning, a day early and we were offered this. We were told the room had been serviced but the sheets looked as though they had not been changed on the main bed, but as it was late by this stage and we were very tired I still slept there but my wife choose the single bed which had fresh sheets. What a place. Never ever again !!

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

We enjoyed the Donegal House pub only and did not stay at the lodge. The outdoor patio is large and had great views. A great way to spend the afternoon following the Kaikoura Whale Run half marathon! Best Guinness we had in NZ. Food is so-so, but the location on a sunny afternoon can't be beat.

We booked on the morning of 10th August through Donegal House website. Arrived there that afternoon and were told we could not get any food and would have to pretend to be his 'cousins' if we had any drinks!!! There were problems with a pest control inspection. Major painting going on in the kitchen. We were shown our room - OMG - the bed had obviously been slept in, empty beer cans on the floor and the room was reeking of cigarette smoke and stale beer.
Also - where are the white washed cottages shown in the advertisement???
Needless to say - we decided not to stay!!!
A major disappointment as I am Irish and this was to be a bit of a nostalgic trip.

This pub was recommended to us whilst surfing... the famous $15 roast.
What a treat! Fantastic atmosphere, welcoming hosts, great tables (for yahtzee playing!) and a roaring fire! I thought i was going to pop due to the size of the roast... and then you have a dessert to squeeze in too! YUM!
Defo be back for another meal!

This pub is worth the visit 7 minutes from Kaikoura, check out the atmosphere, the Irish food and the music. We went on a quiet night and loved the place. If you went there when its bust I imagine a brilliant night out. We only dined we did not stay.

A one-night stay in a motel style hotel with friendly pub attached. Room was pleasant, clean and spacious, overlooking the gardens, with patio chairs outside on the verandah. In the pub, friendly staff served a range of perfectly adequate food at a reasonable price. We had the roast, which was typical of what you would get in an English (or Irish) pub. The continental breakfast next morning was a bit limited in choice, but again adequate. Car parked right outside the door was handy for luggage transfer. Would stay again if passing through Kaikoura, rather than in Kaikoura town itself.

not a lot of choice for hotels in this area.hotel was a single story building, you parked your car in front of room.the rooms were quite basic, but clean and o.k. for one night.the bonus of this hotel was the lovely gardens, the horses, the lovely food served at dinner and the nice staff and owners.
