Looks can certainlt be deceiving! This hostel looked just fine-we had travelled a long day and arrived in Kaikoura searching for a hostel. Should have been suspicious when the first hostel we tryed was full and they kindly offered to ring around and find us beds. They rang and rang and everywhere else was full until they eventually found us a private room in this hostel! We were thrilled but now know why this wasnt the FIRST place they tried for us...It was riddled in bedbugs and I got badly bitten....
They room seemed lovely...private ensuite with plasma screen on the wall and coffee facilities....however the sheets were dark blue so it wouldve been impossible to spot signs of bedbugs not that I even considered checking as the room SEEMED spotless...
I usually rely on tripadvisor for reviews before I book in ANYWHERE but the ONE time I didn't check...I got caught :-(
SIMPLE...DONT EVER STAY HERE....Plenty of other hostels in the town....
It took a while for my arms and back to heal....disgusting me thinks!

Room Tip: There are NONE!
Stayed: March 2011, travelled with friends

We were kept awake til 3 am by - after having been reassured that our room beside the 24 hour lounge would be quiet. The party goers took acception to be asked to quiet down and no active management by the hostel intervened. Not really a safe situation.
The bed bugs are alive and thriving - I have just got antibiotics for them.
The showers my daughter and I used were both blocked with hair in the drains and the water was ankle deep and dirty - nasty.
Two redeeming features - the pool was warm and the kids had fun.
We were refunded our night's accommodation and also the next night we had booked. We then moved on to the YHA - absolutely stunning views, clean, small and welcoming.

Firstly, the communal areas, especially the kitchen was absolutely FILTHY. I refused to so much as take a cup of coffee here. The bathrooms are much the same- wear flip flops in shower to be safe- and the damp, musty, mildew smell was over powering.
The girl who greeted me on reception could definitely use some customer care training.
Also you will have to pay a $10 'care deposit'- quite what for I don't know as nearly everything is broken anyway.
Also the noise levels are unbearable.
My advice? Choose alternative lodgings!

You only need to look at the courtyard area of the hostel manager's living accommodation to realise what a pig-stye this place is. The communal areas are dirty, nothing is cleaned properly. The rooms are shabby. Only one light worked in our room, all the bathroom fans are triggered by someone else's bathroom light being on, we had alot of noise from the kitchen above our room and a fan from the kitchen that intermittently blasted into our room. The 'mamagers' don't really seem give a toss. Definitely don't stay here.
