Dusky Lodge & Backpackers

This is a great little hostel. It has three rather large kitchens, all very well stocked and all have gas stoves, way better than those electric ones. The rooms are kept to a very clean standard, as are the kitchens and bathrooms. You also have free use of the fabulous spa pool and sauna, both of which are great after a cold surf. Would highly recommend this place, great value for money too. Only small negative is the fact that there are no ovens, only small microwave type ones.

Room Tip: Go for the upstairs rooms, very clean and you also have access to a more modern kitchen.

Thank you so much for your kind words. We work hard to keep up with our large hostel, and we appreciate you noticing.

One of the first things I noticed when I came here was the oven situation. But with no trouble I've been able to make pizza, casserole's and a beautiful roast. It's off putting but the little ovens can cook just as much while using much less energy.

We're glad you had a nice time and appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment.

Cheers!
Patricia

My gf and I stayed here for 3 nights while in Kaikoura. The night receptionists Brittany and Cory were very nice and super helpful. It's nice that the hostel has 2 kitchens and a few hang out areas so you can always find some room for yourself. The hostel itself is only a few minutes walk to New World and the downtown area too. Great pool area and hot tub too. Room prices were good and the other staff members were really nice as well.

We stayed in one of the double, ensuite rooms and found them to be lovely. These rooms share a kitchen with the other double ensuite rooms, which makes it a bit quieter - no problems sleeping. The kitchen is relatively well equipped and clean. The internet at this place was the best value of anywhere we stayed in the south island ($4 for 24 hours), and was relatively fast. The pool and the spa area are really nice. Overall a nice place, and pretty good value. The only downside would be that it is a 5-10 minute walk from town, but we didn't find that to be an issue.

Rooms are OK. Kitchen well equipped but not very clean. The best: swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Be careful with the laundry: our white t-shirts turned coloured and broken! And they didn't ever offer to pay us the laundry back...

At backpackers there are always lazy guests who don't clean their dishes, but usually the staff clean the kitchen at least once a day. Here they don't clean it at all; it stinks, the floor is sticky and there are crumbs, dust and bits of food all over the place. The toilets aren't cleaned properly either.

The staff are rude, sarcastic and unhelpful, and refused to post an item I left behind to me even though the post office is a few minutes walk away, on the grounds that no staff are ever able to leave the backpackers. They have a van, which must be for decoration I guess.

The place is spacious and the pool and spa are nice.

I've been staying in backpackers all over the country several times a year since I started alpine trekking 22 years ago, and this is the dirtiest and has the worst service of any I've seen.

I stayed for one night on a Wednesday. The location was very good as you can walk to the main street of Kaikoura in 7 minutes or to the New World supermarket in about 10 minutes in the opposite direction. There was space to park the car, even on the road if busy. The staff on the desk were helpful. The room was very good for the price, a twin room for $80 with ensuite. The shared kitchen upstairs was useful. I didn't go in the pools or sauna, but they made for a nice view. There were nice places to hangout and meet other quests, indoors and out. There was a little noise at night from other guests' doors banging or feet walking by on the landing, but nothing major for me.
