“Excellent budget accommodation”
Reviewed 9 December 2013

My wife and I stayed at Dusky Lodge as our first "backpacker" in New Zealand. The room was small but adequate. The toilet and kitchens were only a few metres away and we didn't have to go outside. The kitchens were both well equipped. The heated swimming pool and even hotter plunge pool were very relaxing. There was offstreet parking but the Lodge was easy to find on Beach Road. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. The views from the deck were very nice.

The place was great and the fact that our room was upgraded was just amazing! The room was really clean and nice and the staff was helpful and kind to us. The kitchens were nice, especially the one that was upstairs looked pretty clean, but I have to say that the one open 24h was a bit dirty. No matter the number of signs saying to wash and dry your dishes, we always found dirty stuff around, however that's not the staff's fault.
There were also swimming pool that unfortunately we didn't use because it was too cold for us..
I would definately go back there as it's a very good place to stay and not far from the centre.

The room was really nice and pretty good value for $80 for a double! We ate out so can't comment on the kitchen facilities. The spa was milky in colour and not particularly hot, and three hours after using it I started vomiting from what I believe was a bacterial infection from the water. The spa area was also littered with alcohol cans and bottles and general rubbish. Checkout is 10am and at 9.50am we had staff come around and remind us that we had ten minutes to be out, which I thought was actually pretty rude - I've never had that in a hostel before and I've stayed in a few. Probably wouldn't stay here again to be honest.

I found Dusky to be a clean, cozy, and comfortable hostel, with friendly, helpful staff, and the best sauna in a backpackers anywhere around! The sauna, hot tub, swimming pool (heated) combination is super, especially at the end of the day, and even more so when a cool rain is coming down. NICE;-)!!

The Dusky Lodge is a big hostel and very clean hostel. You are looking straight to the beautiful mountains through the window and the beds and rooms are quite nice.
Sadly the kitchen is not that well equipped and the hostel isn't very good to meet other people because of the bigness.
But all in all it is a cool place to stay.

Stayed here for three nights on my travels around New Zealand. The hostel was excellent value for money (the only place on my trip where I could afford to get a private - two bed room) as opposed to a dorm room.

Facilities were excellent - lovely pool and Jacuzzi, clean kitchen facilities, good lounge area, nice shared bathrooms.

Staff were very friendly and helpful - they booked all my activities for me whilst I was in Kaikoura.

Distance to the centre of town is good - 10 minutes walk

Another benefit of this hostel is that tour buses such as kiwi experience do not tend to stop here in bulk.

Would definitely stay here again - it was a brilliant backpacker option

Ive stayed here twice and enoyed it both times, once was last year and once a few weeks back, I stayed in the private on suite double last time and those rooms were alot better, you get what you pay for! The Hostel is quite big but there are good lounge area's in all the kitchens. The pool and hot tub wernt working the second time I went and didnt get a chance too use them the first so i cant comment on that. The showers are excelent in both the private and shared bathrooms. Would happily stay here again kaikoura is beautiful, the staff have been excelent and the hostel is well maintained.

Room Tip: If your getting a double and can afford it go for the private ensuites, well worth the extra cash.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review! We appreciate your kind words, and hope to see you back in the future. Our spa pool/ hot tub had to be closed for a few days to do some maintenance but we are pleased to say it is now up and running, the water is hot and relaxing. Cheers!
