Lyell Creek Lodge
Reviewed 27 December 2012

We didn't want to stay at the busy city center, so we choose Lyell Creek lodge. This was a well maintained, clean and cosy accomodation. It has 2 kitchens (one small downstairs, and one bigger with a lounge upstairs), both were very well equipped. The owner Aaron was very friendly and welcoming, however the 2-3 girls (cleaning the rooms, etc.) were a bit rude.

We were unfortunate, because we got the room next to the main door and as a big french group stayed there at that time, our sleep was ruined by the continous door slamming, and loud voices all night long. The house itself stays next to a main road heading north, so the traffic is relatively heavy which may disturb your sleeping as well.

Off street parking available.

Well worth money anyway, we'd chose Lyell Creek Lodge again.

The Lyell Creek Lodge in Kaikoura is my all-time favourite hostel in all of New Zealand. Even though it's a bit of a walk from the town of Kaikoura itself (15 mins), but for me, it's the best one I've stayed in and I've stayed there 3 times now. The guy that runs the hostel, Aaron, has always been very helpful, it's very clean, has two kitchen areas,(upstairs and downstairs), a log fire for the cold nights and a lovely garden area at the back of the hostel, by a little stream. I love the feel of the place - it's cosy, warm and just has a very homely feel to it. Even though the hostels in town are more central, they can be noisy but Lyell Creek is lovely and quiet. I would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Even though it's about 15 mins walk from town, it has the benefit of being in a quiet location.

Good place to stay - the owner and the host were both welcoming.
The kitchen could be better equipped, but they do have a suggestion box, so are open to improving.
A fair walk out of town, but right next to a great fish and chip shop which the host recommended.

Don't be seduced by the website video of ducks swimming in a bubbling brook. The idyllic-looking grassed area out back is uninviting and the creek disappointing. The location is not ideal. It's a fair walk into town and this hostel is right on the road. Traffic noise easily penetrates the thin walls. In fact the thin walls are a real issue. The people sleeping downstairs (who were travelling with us) could hear us putting down our coffee cups in the upstairs lounge room.
The hostel has been renovated so is fairly well-presented but the kitchen was only clean on the surface (I wiped grease from cupboard doors). The cookware is of poor quality and the only large saucepan is a pitted aluminium one.
Positives? The lounge room is spacious and cosy and we enjoyed the slow combustion heater. We were also offered discount prices. Laundry facilities are free and so is wireless internet which I found reliable.
Overall, this place is okay if you're not a light sleeper. The other backpacker hostels in town didn't seem any better but some are off the main road.

We have booked accommodation about 8 weeks prior to our scheduled arrival. We were promised a double room and a twin room, both with ensuite. Upon arrival, we realized that the double room was not with an ensuite. Regrettably, with 2 elderly women, we could not stay in a room without an ensuite. We have paid 60% cancellation fee for both rooms with a verbal agreement that if one of the rooms will be booked later this evening, then this cancellation fee will be refunded. We enquired later that evening whether they have vacancy and were told they are fully booked. Nevertheless, they owner refused to refund any of the cancellation fee. No where in New Zealand did we encounter dishonesty such as this. Be aware!

Meet up with some new friends travelling north from Christchurch, we stopped off in beautiful Kaikoura to swim with the dolphins and see their famous whales.
We all stayed at Lyell Creek Lodge and loved it there. It is a home away from home. Looks like its just been done up with new carpets, beds and facilities etc. The Hostess made us yummy muffins and home made bread and dips.
Free Internet and bikes made it even more enjoyable and affordable!
The dolphins and whales were amazing and so was the local culture and food - Kaikoura is a must for the young and old!
