Ronald, my husband, and I arrived at Manakau one rainy afternoon in the middle of this passing winter. The coziness of the lodge and Neil's warmth made us forget about the cold and the long drive we had that day. We spend 3 nights and 4 days in Manakau and we still wished for more days. The lodge is first class from every perspective: comfortable, elegant, quiet and cozy. The meals are at the same level, they are delicious! Don't go to dine outside, Neil is an amazing cook and we can still remember one of the diners we have there: remarkable!
When in Kaikoura, don't think of any other options go the Manakau Lodge and put yourselves in the hands of his charming owner Neil Protheroe.
After almost 28 nights spend in New Zealand and many lodges in our trip logs we can say with confidence this is one the places that we enjoy the must and will return whenever we have the chance.

This was the highlight of our trip. We stayed only one night and I wish we stayed longer. We booked the deluxe mountain view room and so glad we did. We could watch the mountains from our room, getting darker as the night approached, just wonderful. We dined at the Green Dolphin, which was fabulous. The bed was amazing, we are going to purchase one of our own, it was so good. I've never slept better. The AppleTV was fantastic.

The pictures provided by management on TA are exactly like reality, but I have put some up too.

My husband and I arrived unexpectedly at Manakau Lodge at 7.30 pm one night in June after a flight from Sydney and drive from Christchurch. Unexpectedly to Neil (the owner) as I had booked the wrong date. He therefore wasn't expecting us but did not miss a beat, greeting us and making us comfortable. The accommodation is first class. Our room was beautiful with a huge ultra-modern bathroom and views of the mountains. Everything at Manakau Lodge is thought through and run at a very high level. Sadly, because of my error, we couldn't dine in-house but Neil recommended a great local restaurant (The Green Dolphin) which was fabulous and he was waiting for us on our return with a roaring fire and a glass of wine. Our stay was too short but we will return. Thank you Neil for your hospitality and providing your guests with such a wonderful place to stay.

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay, and just a shame we couldn't offer you our normal dinner service on this occasion. You are not too far away and so hopefully we will have the opportunity to do so in the future. It was great meeting you and we very much appreciate your taking the trouble to post such a generous review of your experience at Manakau Lodge.

What better welcome than a roaring log fire, a genial host (who doubles as a fabulous chef) and a quiet and peaceful location surrounded by open country just a 10 min drive to Kaikoura township.
Look out behind the lodge and there are the mountains (snow topped in winter) and in the other direction the ocean. Rooms are beautifully furnished and equipped and everthing is provided down to an ipad in each one. We enjoyed a truly 5 star dinner and a french influenced breakfast. Between Christchurch and Blenheim this has to be the place to stay !

We stayed at Manakau Lodge during March, the room was beautiful and clean and the view to the mountains was breathtaking. Even walking out the front door is as beautiful - with the 180 degree view of the sea in front of you!
Neil, Eileen and Lauren made us feel so welcome, like part of the family! Nothing was too much trouble and when I received sad news from home in the UK they were the first to pour out a large glass of red wine and make me feel better.
Neil is a wonderful chef and if you are stopping make sure you take the dinner option, you won't be disappointed!

Manakau Lodge is an exceptionally good small high-end B&B. My husband and I liked the peacefully rural but nontheless convenient location (away from the main road), the spectcaular mountain view from our room, the luxurious bathroom, the attention to detail in the fittings and throughout the room and the high quality of the breakfast. Neil is a pro, also in the kitchen, and the dinner he cooked for us was the culinary highlight of our trip to New Zealand. We also appreciated the advice he gave us on things to see and do in the area. We stayed four nights and didn't want to leave. Thank you, Neil!

We stayed at the Manakau Lodge over Easter 2013 and had a wonderful stay. The house is located about 10 minute drive outside of Kaikoura, but if you have a car it is well worth staying here if you are looking for a little more upmarket hotel than the more run down versions inside Kaikoura.
We stayed for two nights, and the rooms are lovely including all the extras like iPads, water etc, the homemade breakfast was very yummy and we were asked the night before what we wanted and what time and Neil accomodated exactly what we asked for. As we were travelling with young children and tend to stay in the room in the evenings it was wonderful to be able to sit in the comfortable arm chairs watching a movie. The only shame was that we missed our whalewatching trip due to a big fog coming in on the day, I guess we will just have to come back.
