“Unique concept, breathtaking views”
Reviewed 25 March 2013

Upon researching for unique properties in NZ, the Hapuku Lodge came up several times and it just meant that we had to try it during our honeymoon. This was also our most expensive and luxurious spend throughout the entire trip...so the bar was set very high! While the experience generally met our expectations, there are some areas I feel require improvement.

I'm not sure if it was that period of time but there seemed to be a lack in staffing. Reception and housekeeping always took some time (or even a few tries) to answer our phone calls, and were not prompt in delivery. Staff were not upfront about additional costs as well - while booking the room, it was clearly stated that dinner was included within the nightly charge. This was not the case as we found out during checkout. Even though my husband's meal had no surcharge, mine did - nearly NZD 100 more - and this was not highlighted to us upon ordering. Either way, the food was excellent and we would not have mind paying this but a mention would have been appreciated.

I also felt like some of the amenities did not quite suit its luxury brand - e.g. coffee, hot chocolate and tea sachets. The room's decor also seems rather dated and some upgrading might do it good. Having said that, I must commend the owners for the concept - the lodge as a whole is very unique and the views are breathtaking! With some improvements, I'd recommend the lodge to others who are willing to spend more for a special experience.

Its very hard to really expain how comfortable and relaxing this beautiful Lodge is. The mountains on one side The Pacific Ocean ,the other, to just sit in the wonderful garden was to be at peace.
The cooking delicious, and a particularly nice touch is that the owners of the Lodge plant one native New Zealand plant for every guest that stays with them.
The bed was THE most comfortable ever!!

Room Tip: I am certain that all the rooms have their charm, I am also certain that you will wish you had booke...

Suggestions to fellow travelers:
1. For a fantastic, relazing, beautiful, and yes high-end, stay, you absolutely MUST stay here.
2. This place is a destination in and of itself; you WILL WANT to stay at least 2 nights. (And kaikoura is great too!)
3. Don’t think you can stay 1 night and then extend another night – they will be booked.
4. Book early.

Unfortunately, we broke many of those rules.

The room was amazing – up in the trees, fabulous views from both sides, unique layout had windows everywhere overlooking olive groves and nature beyond and the deer grazing on grass.
Truly top notch hospitality. A gourmet dinner was included and was tasty but took 2 hours to eat the three courses. (Go early as they ran out of the special of the day). After our 11-day, 9-different-hotels tour of New Zealand, we voted and this was by FAR the MOST COMFORTABLE BED of all.

It’s worth it!

Room Tip: Stay in a tree house!

Hapuka Treetop Lodge is a unique and thoughtfully designed place that is so comfortable that you just want to stay and enjoy longer and longer. The Treetop suites are great with super views - mountains on one side and ocean on the other. You can sit in your bath or stand in your shower and see both! The bed was one of the best we slept in during our two weeks in New Zealand. And the food is superb, from the many choices at breakfast to the great meals served at dinner. This is the place to stay if you are going to Kaikoura for whale watching, which is something that you should do.

Room Tip: Do the Treetop rooms!!

We spent 2 idyllic nights of our honeymoon at this impressive location near Kaikoura. The staff are extremely attentive, it is very relaxed yet everything is of a high standard. The honeymoon package included whale watching and a nighttime skywatchers which was simply magical. Top marks for us and the free wifi is the icing on the cake!

Room Tip: The tree houses!

lovely accommodation, fabulous food and free wi-fi, it would be hard to find anywhere to stay that was better than this! We also really liked the art works on the walls and the main lounge had some ineresting books.

Room Tip: we stayed in lovely rooms in the main lodge - the children thought that the tree houses looked more...

A lot of thought and effort has gone into making Hapuku Lodge a special place to stay. Complimentary minibar drinks, the bathroom facilities, the use of lots of (native) wood, the general setting of the place and the general feel of luxury.
A three-course dinner and cooked breakfast are included and of very good quality. Staff are very friendly and helpful, and really want to make sure you are enjoying your stay.
Of course, when you pay $1265 per night (for up to 4 people in a 2-bedroom treehouse), your expectations are very high and you are allowed to knit pick a little, so here it goes:
- One of the lamps over the bath was missing a lamp shade
- All prices (lodging, drinks) are advertised excluding 15% GST which I find odd
- A big deal was made of dietary requirements during the reservation and upon arrival, but not much seemed to have been done with the information. There were personalised welcome letters in the rooms, for example, but a bottle of soy milk in the minibar for my lactose-intolerant would have been nice
- The shower in the lower room didn't drain and the whole bathroom floor flooded
- The rooms become very bright as soon as the sun comes up (not a problem for me, but I think you should at least have a choice)

Room Tip: Definitely go for a treehouse
