“Memorable stay”
Reviewed 11 December 2013 via mobile

We followed some of the reviewers' advice and stayed at the treehouse. Sadly only for one night....we did not want to leave that place! Very well constructed treehouse, beautifully decorated and the treehouse had amazing views of the deer farm and olive groves where we saw rabbits roaming around.

Bed was most comfortable and the meals were delicious. Nearly all the food are made from their own kitchen. The homemade peanut butter they served at breakfast was fabulous!

Kaikoura was our first stop in the South Island after a few nights in Auckland and Wellington. Hapuku Lodge is amazing! We stayed in one of the "tree houses" which I highly recommend. The upper level has near panoramic views encompassing an olive orchard (they make their own wonderful olive oil here), snow-capped and greeen mountains, a herd of deer (they raise and treat deer like cattle in New Zealand for the venison) and the ocean. The bathroom is spacious, clean and modern and there is a woodburning stove which makes your room so cozy on cool nights. Every day they leave you cookies, there are coffee beans/grinder and an electric teapot and the mini-fridge is stocked with complimentary drinks.
The staff is incredibly helpful with suggestions and bookings and are so friendly.
Then there is the food. A 3 course dinner and breakfast are included in the price of your stay here. In the two nights we stayed here, among us we had a duck back salad with crispy fried spinach, ribeye cooked to perfection, monk fish and some other fish we had never heard of which was heavenly, a pasta starter (not too large) with spiced butter and herbs, black pudding and incredible desserts. For breakfast there was an array of toast/homemade peanut butter, vegimite, muesli, yogurt, fruit etc - and then 5 or so cooked items on the menu to select from. The first day we all had duck confit "hash" which was amazing with a poached egg and potatoes fried in duck fat and steamed spinach.
It is expensive to stay here - but not when you take everything into consideration. The level of cuisine alone brought the relative cost down quite a bit as a meal of that quality would have cost the five of us at least $100 USD a piece in a restaurant. The owners have really tried to think of every little thing to make your stay more pleasant. There is a library of nearly 350 DVDs to select from and watch in your room and there is FREE UNLIMITED wifi, which I'm starting to realize is a true luxury commodity in New Zealand. Most hotels charge you an amount for limited devices AND limited megabytes which is a serious drag.
I highly recommend this place.

We stayed at the Hapuku Lodge for 1 night and it was way too short! The grounds are beautiful with deer farms and olive groves. Service was top notch from checking in to the time we left. The treehouses are fabulous but slightly hard to bring the luggages up. The views are simply astounding. From the bathroom of the treehouse you'll see Olive Groves. From the fireplace you'll see quite a large number of deer about 50 meters away. We really wished to have stayed for a few more days. But what a perfect way to end a holiday.

Room Tip: Get the treehouse.

I don't think I really understood the word "hospitality" until I stayed at the Hapuku lodge. The lodge itself, the view, the grounds, and the tree houses are all quite wonderful. However, the staff and sense of hospitality at the Hapuku lodge is truly unparalleled. I have stayed at world class hotels all over the world, and I have never had a better experience with customer service.

We went to the lodge in a big group with a total of seven family members. We stayed at all different areas in the hotel, including the main lodge and the tree houses. Everyone was very happy with their room. There are wonderful touches such as heated floors in the bathrooms and an ipod with a relaxing playlist in the room. What a perfect get-away!

The food at the restaurant was world class. I am a classic San Francisco "foodie" and am notoriously picky about my fine dining. Every meal we ate at the lodge was innovative and unique and made with the freshest ingredients. I even saw one of the chefs running outside and picking herbs from the garden just before using them! Best of all, my group went fishing one day and caught some fresh fish. The restaurant made a custom menu with the fish that we caught and it was absolutely delicious!

As for the staff, from the very beginning they were incredibly accommodating and friendly. They went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and comfortable. For example, even though the kitchen wasn't open they made us sandwiches for lunch when we were hungry. When I forgot to purchase motion sickness medication, they had some available for me. They even learned that my husband and I were lactose intolerant and made us dairy free truffles and had soy milk in the fridge in the room without us even asking!

Best of all, the staff is truly genuine. They are not accommodating and hospitable because it is their job; they seem to truly enjoy getting to know their guests and making their stay pleasant. The are caring and friendly people who really know how to make your experience special.

I read a few of the negative reviews, and I honestly don't think those people actually stayed at the lodge. For example, claiming that the staff didn't say hello to them is absolutely preposterous based on my experience. Saying that the restaurant isn't good is just ridiculous. If you can complain while sipping a glass of wine and eating a world class meal in front of a view of the mountains, then I think it has more to say about you than the hotel.

Overall I am so happy to have met the staff and stayed at such a beautiful place. It was a wonderful experience that my whole group will be repeating!

OK, so on leg 2 of our New Zealand honeymoon trip, we wanted to stop by Kaikoura for just a few days (2 nights, 3 days) on our drive up the coast. We had initially thought of staying at Hapuku based on some online reviews, but decided against it because of the high cost, unknown name and some of the poor reviews here citing something about excessive sand flies, etc. At the last minute though, because of "seafest" - the annual shindig in Kaikoura for locals, all the motels were booked in Kaikoura proper, and so we looked more to B&B's and opted on Hapuku because it seemed like a better option than some of the other B&B's. We really were not sure what to expect.

Holy god. We just were flabbergasted. This place is breathtakingly beautiful. The service, to die for. The food. Wow. Words cannot describe - it is a PERFECT honeymoon location. Here are some of the highlights:

- stunning stunning view. we were lucky the weather was really beautiful our first two days. You have like a 200 degree view (from our treehouse) of the snow-capped mountains on one side, the ocean on the other, and everything in between (deer, sheep, little bunnies in their olive garden).
- real wood fire place
- gourmet, first-class meals (ALL INCLUSIVE!) - tailored to your liking. OK - this is the B&Bish part: there are so few guests, the staff all know everyone, and right when you check in they will ask you when you want dinner so they can prepare. They have everything set up and you can pick from the daily menu what sort of food you want for your 3-course dinner. Breakfast is more free, but similar deal. on our first day, we actually had an early start so asked for something else and they made a tray for us the night before that had the BEST continental breakfast i've ever had - home-made granola, yogurt, fresh milk, delicious banana bread thing, homemade regular bread, honeys and jams and fresh fruit. And later that day, we were wondering if we could get something for a late afternoon snack / lunch - the guy at the reception told us there was no pantry really - just them - and they would just make whatever we wanted....we just asked for a sandwich and they made a delicious bacon, cheese, caramelized onion and mushroom melt on homemade buttered toast with a fresh side salad....
- free minibar stocked with beers, fresh organic juice and fresh milk
- ipod dock WITH ipod playing a really chill play list (so chill we actually copied the songs and playlist onto our laptop before we left...)
- all tailor-made furnishings with wood imported from all over. we read the little story about the lodge - the beds are apparently the product of the owners (who live in california) feeling that they could not find a mattress anywhere that was good enough so they had one custom made for the lodge
- the friendliest staff
- away from any lights in the city or anywhere, the stars at night were amazing. coudl even see the milky way clearly.
- also has a very nice outdoor heated pool and sauna

Only criticism:
why didn't we stay longer?

I would absolutely recommend Hapuku for anyone looking for luxury accommodations going through Kaikoura. This is the ONLY place. We could not even imagine staying in any of those motor lodges or motels in the city after this place.

Room Tip: We picked tree house #5 (furthest from the reception lodge) and did not regret it. Tree houses i thi...

We had the most wonderful 5 days at Hapuku Lodge. The view is so incredible words could hardly describe it. Ocean on one side and Snow capped mountains on the other. The deer racing around in the paddocks outside were fascinating. 10 minutes drive from Kaikoura was good. We did a lot of day trips up to the snow, wineries down into town and Wale watching.

The Olive Suite is large and spacious with windows all around so that you don't miss any of the view and is perfect for an extended stay with kitchen and dining facilities. The décor is homely and very cosy. We were also lucky enough to be able to take a peek at the Tree Houses and the Lodge Rooms, for our next visit. The Tree Houses are great for a short but very romantic stay. They are compact but with great views from the ocean to the mountains. The Lodge Rooms have more space with their own lounge and are very well appointed and Chic.

The food prepared by Fiona and Jeremy was divine and very imaginative, combining such subtle taste that worked perfectly together and creating new options every day, breakfast and dinner. Chris the Manager was very good with his wine selections. All Kiwi wines and all very good. The Service that Chris and Tui gave was impeccable and they really make you feel so very welcome and they went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. The owner also made us feel welcome and took the time to come and chat.

I could only fault a couple of thing during our stay and that would be the shower at the Olive Suite. All others looked good but the Olive Suite shower was just a little odd. Worked fine just could be situated a little bit better and the cupboard for the clothes could also do with a bit of a make over and more hangers, if staying more than a couple of nights.

The prices are up there but for a special holiday or weekend it was great. It was my first trip to New Zealand and I will definitely be going back.

Room Tip: Lodge Rooms are good if you like to stay undercover and are quite spacious - view to the mountains w...

Very attentive staff. Fantastic location, especially in winter, when the nearby baby seals can be visited. The dinner provided was one of the best I had in recent years. We didn't have any problems at all.
