My husband and I stayed at this B&B while traveling through NZ. Just as all the reviews have said, Margaret is probably one of the sweetest women you'll ever meet. She's lived in that house since she was 4 years old and shared all sorts of interesting stories about her childhood and the area. Margaret and her late husband started this B&B many, many years ago and were the first in the area to do so. It's obvious she loves meeting new people and keeps her price modest and fair.

The bed was very comfortable and, although the house is older, we had everything we needed. This experience evoked that warm, "homey" feeling I used to get as a kid when I'd stay at my grandma's house. This is what B&Bs are all about!

Margaret is the perfect host in the idyllic setting of Kaikoura Bay. The property is set in lovely gardens in a homely style.

Margaret collected me from my excursion of swimming with dolphins (dolphin encounter) and offered me a cup of tea and some fantastic home made cake and pleasant conversation and dropped me to the station in the morning after a peaceful nights sleep to recharge the batteries.

If you want a home away from home then this is the place to come.

As an aside the dolphin excursion was excellent and is about a 20 minute walk from the train station. The coffee shop which is part of dolphin encounter is also excellent. Unfortunately no free wireless internet was available, this is pretty normal in NZ. Kaikoura is an optional overnight stopover in the scenic train from Christchurch through to Picton/Wellington and is well worth a visit.

Marjorie, my wife, and I have just spent a wonderfull 3 days at Bay View in Kaikora. Our host Margaret is the most wonderfull person you could wish to meet. Her one aim in life appears to be to make you happy and comfortabe in her home. Bay View is a large bungalow looking out over Kaikoura bay. The view from the large picture window in the breakfast room is awesome. Margaret produces most of the food in her own garden. She also bakes her own bread, which is so light and tasty, it is difficult not to ask for more. If you are going to Kaikoura ther is no accommodation to come anywhere near Bay View.

It was a fabulous stay, i went in that place for 3 days, with my 2 daughters, and we kept of this marvellous place a wonderfull memory !
Margaret is exactly like THE grand-mother you had, picking us at the airport, booking for us (and that is great when we don't speak english very well), taking us at the center of kaikoura, suggest us good restaurants...
A charming place, with nice rooms, fire on the cheminée, and a breakfast on the top of the top ! a family bread, a family muesly,
And Margaret made us very lucky, as we saw 7 sperm whales... We will never forget it.

I stayed for 2 nights at Bayview B and B and I had a fantastic time.
My hostess, Margaret is the most charming person I have met in the country. She is very welcoming and her breakfast is excellent: she wakes up very early in the morning to make her own bread.
She booked all the activities for me (whale watching, swimming with the seals) and she made sure I had everything I needed.
Her place is lovely: comfortable rooms and great garden....I do recommend it!

I only stayed one night in the Bay View Bed and Breakfast but it was one of the most pleasent welcomes I got throughout my trip around NZ. Margaret, the owner, was delighted to have me just drop by for the night and welcomed me with tea and cake. Bed was comfy but although Margaret lit the fire in the adjoining guestlounge was a little cold (it was nearly winter mind) but good value all the same at $55 per night for the spacious single I was in. The house had a lot of character and rustic charm.

I had to get up early to go swimming with the dolphins but Margaret was ready to cook breakfast at what ever time I wanted - good it was too.

I would recommend this to anyone who has a car and doesn't mind being a 3 minute drive out of the town centre. Quiet location, charming host - would go there again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Margaret Woodill is the classic Kiwi grandmother and thinks nothing of getting up at 5.30 am to cook a full breakfast including homemade bread before your whale watching or dolphin swimming trip in Kaikoura, New Zealand. She’s lived in her Kaikoura peninsula home with its sweeping views of sea and mountains since 1934. She began taking in passing travellers over 20 years ago, just before the whales and dolphins turned the township into a tourist Mecca. When her four children left home, opening a bed and breakfast seemed a logical use for spare bedrooms and bathrooms. Since husband Bob’s death in 1999, Margaret says guests are her family and that’s why she calls it a HOMESTAY rather than a B&B. ... more   less
