“Wonderful!”

We felt very comfortable and at home at this B&B. The accommodations were great and the homemade breakfasts were delicious. You will not find a more caring host.

handy location. We had a private bathroom. There are other rooms. Margaret let us check our email. She does not have WiFi.

On arrival at Bayview we were greeted by Margaret (and her daughters who happened to be there at the time) and we immediately felt at home. After settling in Margart took the time to chat to us over a cup of tea and slice of cake, helped us arrange our whale watching trip the following day and gave us good tips on where to go and what to see. Our room was comfortable and the breakast was a hearty one - just what we neded to set us up for the day. Overall a delightful place to stay with a wonderful host.

If you are looking for 5 Star luxury this is not for you (after all it is a homestay not a hotel) but if you want 5 star hospitality and friendliness then stay here and you will not be disappointed. Another reviewer said that it was like staying with Grandma - we could not describe it any better.

We stayed with Margaret on New Year's Eve, the night before we went for a swim with dolphins. She was very welcoming, laid out tea and homemade carrot cake for our arrival and gave us a full fry-up brekkie after our swim. It's like staying with your Granny, she's so friendly and interested in where you're from and lots of chat of the interesting people she has met over the years from operating her B&B. The room we stayed in was ensuite, chintzy and cute - exactly like staying with your Gran! Big thumbs up!

We had a great time in Margaret's beautiful home, she was very hospitable and prepared such a nice homely breakfast for us (eggs from her hens, fruits/jams from her vegetable plot!) and it was so pleasant to relax in beautiful Kaikoura. If you want to slow it down, and have a chance to chat/play the piano/read and enjoy the scenery, I would highly recommend Margaret's home.

What makes the Bayview B&B Home Stay such a delightful, welcoming and friendly place to stay can be summed up in one word. And that word is 'Margaret', the owner. While Margaret is a grandmother several times over (lucky grandchildren!), she is more like the person you have known all your life and count among the best of your friends. The evening we were lucky enough to stay with her, the house was full of other guests, family and friends. Upon arrival we were immediately invited to the kitchen table for tea and home made cake and included in the conversation as if we were friends or relatives who had just dropped in and not strangers from another country.

Margaret has a great sense of humour and her actions just confirm that she enjoys meeting and making her guests feel like they are truly at home. When we got back from dinner, we were again asked to gather around the table to meet one of her daughters and her husband who had popped in and we spent a couple of delightful hours swapping travel experiences with them, Margaret and with other guests from New Zealand, Japan and England.

Margaret is up early in the morning to make breakfast and since you eat in the kitchen, it is just like being at home. Indeed, my wife and I have never felt more at "home" while travelling than we did at Margaret's. (Check out her garden too - amazing!).

Margaret, when you get to your 10,000th guest next year, they will be special, but just as special as have the other 9,999 who have had the pleasure to meet you and to be part of your household for however long they stayed with you. Thanks for making our stay such a great one.

My husband and I stayed at this B&B while traveling through NZ. Just as all the reviews have said, Margaret is probably one of the sweetest women you'll ever meet. She's lived in that house since she was 4 years old and shared all sorts of interesting stories about her childhood and the area. Margaret and her late husband started this B&B many, many years ago and were the first in the area to do so. It's obvious she loves meeting new people and keeps her price modest and fair.

The bed was very comfortable and, although the house is older, we had everything we needed. This experience evoked that warm, "homey" feeling I used to get as a kid when I'd stay at my grandma's house. This is what B&Bs are all about!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Margaret Woodill is the classic Kiwi grandmother and thinks nothing of getting up at 5.30 am to cook a full breakfast including homemade bread before your whale watching or dolphin swimming trip in Kaikoura, New Zealand. She’s lived in her Kaikoura peninsula home with its sweeping views of sea and mountains since 1934. She began taking in passing travellers over 20 years ago, just before the whales and dolphins turned the township into a tourist Mecca. When her four children left home, opening a bed and breakfast seemed a logical use for spare bedrooms and bathrooms. Since husband Bob’s death in 1999, Margaret says guests are her family and that’s why she calls it a HOMESTAY rather than a B&B. ... more   less
