“Fantastic spot, wonderful breakfast!”
Reviewed 23 December 2012

We stayed here for one night and wish we could have stayed for longer. We were given a very warm welcome from Quentin and Jane (and Jack the dog!) and made to feel at home immediately. They shared a wealth of knowledge about Kaikoura and the surrounding area with us and had even collected menus from local restaurants to help decide where to eat. The hot tub was the perfect place to relax with a beer after a long walk around the penninsula. Breakfast was absolutely delicious and made even better by the view from our room! Will definitely be back!

Room Tip: We stayed in Dolphin - comfy bed and great view

Unfortunately we only stayed one night at this wonderful B&B. Even though we had booked a room downstairs they upgraded us to a room upstairs with an amazing view over the mountains, without any extra charge! From the very first moment we saw our room it gave us a "home" like feeling. Quentin and Jane also offered us complimentary beer and wine. One of the best parts of the stay was the breakfast, simply put - AMAZING! Quentin and Jane were perfect hosts and our only regret is that we only stayed one night.

Room Tip: Rooms at the top floor are recommended!

I was a shame you only had one night in Kaikoura; hopefully you may get back this way again. We were happy to give you liked the room upgrade, when this is possible we like to do this for our guests.

Our stay at Nikau lodge could not have been better. Breakfssts were a delicious, friendly affair and set us up well for the day. The bed (seal room) was the most comfortable we had in our three week trip around nz! We had three nights, although we wish we'd stayed longer. Jane and Quentin were knowledgable and extremely helpful enabling us to get the most out of our stay. I can't imagine better hosts and we hope to return one day!
Thanks Jane and Quentin ( and Jack) for making us so welcome!
Ben and Emma.

We stayed 2 nights at Nikau Lodge in Kaikoura, and had a wonderful time. The room (Dolphin) had fantastic views of the mountains and sea, and was very comfortable. The house was delightful and spacious and the gardens (with a hot tub) were very pretty. Our hosts were so welcoming and friendly - they could not have been more helpful and knowledgeable! The breakfast menu changed every day - all local produce, with a very wide range of choices.
We chose Nikau Lodge from their website - it is absolutely accurate in its description of the location, accommodation and service.

Room Tip: Choose a room from their descriptions on the website. The upstairs rooms have the best views.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights on our honeymoon. The room was cute and comfy, the grounds were beautiful and the view from the room was amazing! The hosts were extremely friendly, making us feel comfortable and providing excellent advice on places to go. The breakfast at the lodge was also delicious. Loved Nikau Lodge!

We stayed two nights at the Nikau Lodge in Kaikoura...such a beautiful place, welcoming hosts, and an overall great experience. Breakfast was amazing (and not the "same old thing" that most places serve). We stayed in the Whale Room and enjoyed the breathtaking views of the beach framed by snow-capped mountains.

The amenities at the Lodge were great, and the hosts were so helpful. Thank you!

I booked this via the internet, always a bit of a gamble, but was delighted with my decision from the moment I arrived. Quentin, the owner along with his wife Jane, met me at the bus stop and took me to his home - a wonderful detached wooden house full of character and with a verandah looking over Kaikoura, the bay and the mountains beyond - superb!
My welcome was warm but not "over the top" and I was invited to join my hosts for a glass of wine after I had settled in. My room was spacious, plenty of storage space, an extremely comfortable double bed and an en suite bathroom that looked like it had been installed the week before it was so pristine. I also had a small bay window area where I could sit and admire the stunning view. Across the passageway from my room was a small 'fridge stocked with cold beer, water and wine all free and available.
Joining my hosts in their open plan ground floor area we shared a glass (or two!) of wine and this gave me a chance to get to know them, useful as Quentin is a little shy and retiring, but soon came out of his shell. They gave me directions into town and advised me as to where to eat - and drink.
Breakfast was a delight; the evening before you are asked to fill in a small breakfast questionnaire as to your preferences, and your choice of time, with everything from a continental breakfast to a full English? and other choices such as eggs Benedict - which I had with smoked salmon on a wonderfully fresh muffin. |There really is nothing like a good muffin.
So to summarise - as Kaikoura is such a wonderful place to see New Zealand wild life, I suggest you book a room at the Nikau Lodge as "kiwickly" as possible, and "seal" the deal with Quentin and Jane. Your decision certainly won't be an "albatross" round your neck and you will have a "whale" of a time.

Room Tip: My room overlooked the town and the bay, so I would recommend it - I think it was Dolphin.

Many thanks for your charming and eloquent review. We are very honoured to be in your top 3 B&B's. Quentin is working on his "shy and retiring" tendencies.
