“Wish we could have stayed longer.”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

Julie's father met us at the station and gave us a great welcome. Our room on the first floor of the annex had a superb view over the Pacific Ocean and breakfast the following morning was continental style and plentiful. We were driven down to the station for an excellent whale watching trip and were sorry that we had to catch the train again and couldn't stay longer.

Bendamere House Bed and Breakfast is conveniently located on a hill, about a 10-minute walk to the seaside town of Kaikoura. The grounds of the house are beautiful, with its bedrooms looking out onto a wide expanse of lawn, followed by the rich turquoise of the sea and beyond that snowcapped mountain peaks. The lawn is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine and take in the astounding natural beauty of this part of the world. It was, in fact, a bit of a disappointment to come inside the room. Like the previous reviewer, our room was the converted garage, whose decorator apparently loved the color brown. The room was clean, the bed passable but not the most comfortable, and the bathroom minuscule, with no space to stash toiletries. A big picture window from which to take in the view and a small refrigerator were positive attributes. But a definite problem was that the room appeared to have no air conditioning or heater, with the exception of a very small and old space heater. Perhaps you don't need air conditioning so close to the ocean, but you definitely need a better source of heat than was provided. Most of the rooms are located in an annex that looked newer, so perhaps those rooms were better appointed. Julia was friendly and helpful in making dinner reservations. The breakfast was your basic continental. She did leave small containers of homemade shortbread in the rooms, as well as send guests off for the day with a homemade muffin. It wasn't a bad stay but it could have been so much better.

We stayed in room 5 for 2 nights. It is a converted garage decorated in shades of brown and reminded us of a budget motel rather than a luxury en suite bedroom. The bathroom is a corridor approx 1 metre wide, making it impossible to dry yourself after a shower without banging your elbows, or cleaning your teeth without banging your head!
There is no denying the views are stunning but this does not compensate for poor accommodation.

Bendamere is just 5 minutes walk from the centre of kaikoura but could be miles away. The view from the garden over the north bay to the distant snow capped mountains is magnificent. Most of the accommodation is in a purpose built annex to the house and is designed to a very high standard. Julie made us most welcome and offered suggestions for places to eat. Luckily the day of our whale watch trip was sunny and not too 'bumpy'. We managed to see two sperm whales and a school of dolphins. We would definitely recommend this location if you plan to visit Kaikoura.

Perched just above town and a short walk to the main street, this is a lovely BnB with amazing water views. The hosts are very nice as well. The only draw back and why I give only 4 stars was the less than stellar breakfast. But, the view and location make this worth the stay.

If you like staying in B & B's you'll love this place. If you don't like B & B's you'll still place this place! We finished our three week tour of NZ here and couldn't have found a better place for our final three nights - the views are stunning (possibly the best in the area), the rooms spacious, clean and well equipped and the owners Julie and Kerry couldn't be more helpful and welcoming (without being overly fussy). We stayed in the room with the window above the bed and had no problems with the light mentioned by the previous reviewer. We did however make the most of the light by getting up early (twice) to watch the most spectacular sunrise from our balcony. This place is a real find so don't hesitate to book.

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony have the best views

We liked this B&B. Very clean, spacious and views to die for.
Parking is free, shower is hot and for taller people convenient hung up high and the bed is comfortable. It is located near town centre and you can easily walk to the restaurants and shops.
Slightly negative was that our bed was located directly underneath a wall window with curtains that could not totally block out the sunlight. So every morning we had a early morning. In some cases this can be good (we needed to get up early to go swimming with the dolphins) but when you want to sleep in, this can get annoying. ;-)

No cooked breakfast was offered, so if you are not keen on cereals, than breakfast is somewhat limited.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased that you enjoyed our amazing bed and ocean and mountain views. We recently reviewed our curtains and found the chocolate brown thermal curtains we have put in have the best light block out that we could put in. Will certainly ask more customers but so far have had good favourable comments on this.
We serve breakfast in the communual dining room which includes a choice of 4 cereals, a fresh fruit and melon bowl, yoghurt, toast, spreads and honeys, either plain or ham and cheese toasted croissants, orange juice, tea and coffee plus a freshly baked muffin to take away if they wish.
Thanks again and do hope your trip went well in our beautiful country! Regards, Julie
