“Set the standard for our South Island visit”
Reviewed 1 January 2013

We stayed here for the first two nights of our 18-day circuit of the South Island. Penny and Trevor certainly set a high standard - unobtrusive but very friendly long-term residents who made us welcome and were always ready to share their knowledge or simply to have a chat. The room was spacious, well furnished and comfortable, the scenery was stunning, and Penny's breakfasts were a great way to start the day. We walked around town and along the headland track, and swam with over 200 dusky dolphins - a pleasantly active way to unwind and have fun.

We spent a very pleasant weekend in Kaikoura overlooking the unique view of ocean and snow covered mountains and enjoying the great local food. A truly superb breakfast and great hosts make this a relaxing place to lay back for a day or two.

The guest house is set in one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is on a headland overlooking the sea with a view of snowcapped mountains to one side, absolutely stunning.
Penny and Trevor our hosts were great, very informative about the area, the breakfasts were brilliant.5 minutes drive to Kaikoura centre, which has some good restaurants and of course Encounter Kaikoura from where you can swim with dolphins out at sea. Miharotia is a perfect place to unwind, large rooms ,very quiet, all in all a great place to stay.Go check out the friendly seals down on the headland

Room Tip: Go swim with the dolphins, its breathtaking.

From the moment you arrive, the substantial, modern architecture is more than a little bit breath-taking. Very high-spec place with a lot of attention to detail clearly shown. We splashed out on a top-drawer place to enjoy Kaikoura from and couldn’t have been more pleased. The setting is obviously spectacular – the views, the surrounds, the mountains(!!!) and the fit-out are first-class. We dropped down the road for a fresh, local crayfish which we enjoyed for an afternoon treat with a bottle of Nelson Sav. Doesn’t get much better.

This is a fantastic place to stay if visiting Kaikoura .Location and views are outstanding overlooking the ocean and snow capped mountains in the distance. Our room was large, well equipped ,very comfortable and had a view of the wonderful turquoise sea.Trevor and Polly embody hospitality-from serving up yummy breakfasts to sharing lots of interesting infomation about the area and things to do and places to eat.One of the most memorable experiences of our holiday in NZ was walking round the Kaikoura peninsula-about 7 or 8 miles -and just being blown away by its beauty-Polly even packed us a little picnic to keep us going! Kaikoura is a physically spectacular place and we loved it-whale watching great fun and good range of cafes, restaurants and fish and chips-we had lovely meal in Green Dolphin. If we make it back to NZ ,we will go back to Kaikoura and stay here!

I can only echo the reviews of others. This place is absolutely beautiful. Our room was large and beautifully furnished, we thoroughly enjoyed our patio with a view of the ocean. Trevor and Polly were gracious hosts, gave us very good information and were delightful to visit with over a delicious breakfast. Trevor told us all about fishing for Paua, and he even gave us a gorgeous shell to take home. It now sits in my bathroom. Our only regret is that we only stayed one night. We wish we could have had longer to stay and enjoy the place.

We recently spent two weeks on the South Island, the Miharotia House was one of my favorite places that we stayed at. The room that we stayed in was beautiful, clean, and spacious. We had a patio with a great view of the mountains and sea. Location is great - there are nearby running trails and hiking trails, and some really great restaurants. Only a five minute drive to the whale watching. The breakfast was great.

The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. In fact, my husband and I became very sick one day (must have caught a bug on the plane ride in), and Polly allowed us to stay an extra night (luckily the room was free). She went to the store and brought us powerade and snacks, and arranged to have a local doctor come in and check on us. We were incredibly thankful that while we unfortuantely lost a day on the trip due to sickness, that it happened while we were at the Miharotia house.

The one last thing I will mention is that Kaikoura was one of my favorite places in New Zealand - the views of the cliffs over the sea were incredible, and we saw three whales within just one hour on our whale watch tour. We only spent one night here but I wish we had spent more. The nearby hike along the coast was breathtaking - it's a short and easy hike, but we went in the evening and were able to experience one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. Definitely visit Kaikoura, and stay at the Miharotia House if you can!

Room Tip: We stayed in the room with the zebra print - it was perfect!
